CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 3, 2003) - At the request of Lowe's Motor Speedway officials, NASCAR has agreed to move the start of the "Little Trees" 300 NASCAR Busch Series race on Friday night, Oct. 10, to 8 p.m. The race was originally scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Track officials made the request after a 7:30 p.m. concert was scheduled within two miles of the speedway at an outdoor amphitheater.
"Although it was well-publicized that the 'Little Trees' 300 would start at 7:30 p.m., we felt like moving the race back to 8 was the right thing to do for our fans and commuters who'll be making their way through the speedway area," said H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and general manager of Lowe's Motor Speedway.
"Delaying the green flag by 30 minutes will give people more time to get into our facility and decrease their chances of missing any portion of our inaugural nighttime NASCAR Busch Series race. Our gates will still open at 2 p.m., so we hope folks will try to arrive early and avoid rush-hour altogether."
The final NASCAR Winston Cup practice sessions for the Oct. 11 UAW-GM Quality 500 were also pushed back 30 minutes. The sessions will now run from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. and 6:10 to 6:55 p.m. on Friday.
With more than 70,000 people expected to attend the race, 12,000 at the concert and 36,000 cars on the road with Friday-afternoon commuters, increased traffic delays are possible. However, speedway officials are working with the State Highway Patrol, N.C. Department of Transportation and other consultants to ease the congestion.
State officials are encouraging race fans to utilize Highway 29 to reach the speedway and leave Interstate 85 to rush-hour commuters. Concert goers are encouraged to reach the amphitheater via Highway 49 and the often-underutilized I-485.
