FONTANA, Calif. (April 26, 2004) --- Coast Guard Racing and Labonte Motorsports NASCAR Busch Series Team will join California Speedway and host approximately 150 Hispanic college and high school engineering students at the Southern California superspeedway April 29-30. This event will expose the students to the engineering opportunities offered by the Coast Guard, California Speedway and NASCAR.

"This is a great opportunity for these young people to see up close what opportunities may exist for them in the world of racing," said Bill Miller, California Speedway president. "Anytime we have the chance to work with young people and get them involved and excited about racing it's a win for all of us in the sport."

On Thursday, April 29, approximately 20 students from member institutions of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) will meet with the "Shield of Freedom" No. 44 Coast Guard crew to discuss the crew member's roles in racecar preparation and performance. The students will then be treated to a tour of the NASCAR Busch Series garage where they will witness the technical inspection process and get the chance to meet with NASCAR officials (as available) before wrapping up the day by observing the NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series practice.

On Friday, April 30, approximately 120 high school students from the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Award Corporation's (HENAAC) "Viva Technology" program will get a taste of NASCAR excitement as they view the NASCAR Busch Series qualifying from the grandstands. In addition, the students will get a chance to talk with representatives from the Coast Guard, California Speedway and NASCAR and will receive a tour of the California Speedway midway area.

Recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce is a primary goal of the Coast Guard and the service is committed to maximizing the potential of its partnership with Labonte Motorsports during the 2004 NASCAR Busch Series season to build awareness to potential recruits and those that influence them. Earlier this month the team announced that it will be running the Spanish translation of Coast Guard, "Guarda Costas," on the racecar's left quarter panel during the 15 races it will compete in this season.
