BRISTOL, TN - To say this hasn't been the start to the 2000 NASCAR Busch Series season that Jeff Purvis was looking for would be an understatement. The veteran driver of the Porter-Cable Pontiac has run well in most of the races, but has only 1 top-ten (7th in Las Vegas) to show for his efforts. Purvis is hoping to change his luck this weekend with a return to his homestate of Tennessee and the Bristol Motor Speedway. The Clarksville, Tennessee native spent a day testing on the high banks of Bristol Motor Speedway last week and feels ready for action.
"We were pretty good in the test here last week," Purvis said. "I believe we can take what we learned and put it to solid use in both qualifying and the race, it's time for us to put on a show and win a race, Bristol would be a great place for that to happen."
Leading the efforts this weekend for the Porter-Cable team will be interim crew chief, Mike Byrd. Crew chief Johnny Allen was released earlier in the week and Byrd will step in with help from Special Projects Director Curtis Markham and fellow crew chief, Bryant Frazier of the #22 MBNA Pontiac team, the other half of the Joe Gibbs Busch Series racing team. Byrd spent time last season as a crew chief for Curtis Markham in his limited effort out of the Diamond Ridge Motorsports shop.
Keep an eye on the #4 car this weekend, the driver and the team feel they have something to prove and like in other sports, teams and players tend to perform a little bit better when playing at home.
Ø Sponsor Porter-Cable is also looking forward to the Tennessee homecoming. Porter-Cable is located on the western side of Tennessee in Jackson.
Ø Vice President of Busch Operations for Joe Gibbs Racing, Steve de Souza is the defending car owner winner of the Cheez-It 250. De Souza was a part owner last year for the car of race winner Jason Keller.
