BRISTOL, TN (August 19, 2002) - Tim Sauter definitely has something to prove at this weekend's Food City 250 NASCAR Busch Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway. First, Sauter will carry the Mac Tools colors in a one-race sponsorship for the Friday, August 23 event under the lights. For Sauter and his AP Performance Racing Team, it's a chance to show what his team is worth to corporate sponsor. After fighting back from a midrace tangle at Bristol last March, it's also another chance for Sauter to prove he's one of the top short-track racers on the circuit.
"This is a great opportunity to showcase Mac Tools and AP Performance Racing at the same time," said Sauter, noting his No. 19 Chevy will have a special red paint job and reflective Mac Tools decals for the Bristol night event. "Whenever we have a sponsor, it makes the team work even harder in the hope that we can prove ourselves."
Sauter has raced most of the season without primary sponsorship backing. In the five races the team has had a marketing partner, Sauter has steered his way to four Top 10 performances. The Necedah, WI native is confident he and the team can produce the same kind of results for Mac Tools at Bristol, Sauter's favorite type of racetrack.
"I walked across the racetrack when I first got there last year and seeing the place just took my breath away," said Sauter, the 1999 American Speed Association champion. " Bristol is the Super Bowl of short tracks. If I weren't a driver, Bristol would be the one race I would still come to. I'm used to that style of racing coming from ASA where we raced at similar tracks like Salem (IN) and Winchester (IN) Speedways. They are fast and vicious tracks that produce survival races - just like at Bristol. Good, tight, short-track races at night with a packed grandstand is what racing is all about."
Sauter proved his short-track scills in his first Bristol NBS start rolling to a ninth-place finish in the 2001 spring event. This past spring, however, Sauter's hard-luck 16th-place finish, courtesy of a mid-race wreck not of his making, battered hopes of a Top-10 effort and left the AP Performance Racing Team hungry for more.
"This should be a good race for us," said Sauter. "I excited to have a premiere sponsor such as Mac Tools come aboard and we have something to prove after last spring's race at Bristol. We will definitely be one of the teams to watch."
Sauter and AP Performance Racing will take the green flag in the Food City 250 at Bristol Saturday, August 23, at 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The event will telecast live on TNT and broadcast worldwide on MRN Radio.
