DID YOU LEAVE A LITTLE BIT OUT THERE? "I'm not sure. It was a consistent lap. From what we were in practice we changed quite a few things. We talked some things over with some of our teammates because you have to balance both worlds - qualifying and race - with the same setup but racing is more important."
GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 National Guard/Subway Taurus (Qualified 4th)
"This track has got a ton a grip right now and it's really, really fast. My car was just really solid. It was a really good lap. I didn't want to try the second one because you're always taking a chance qualifying here because you're always on the edge. I think it will hold up for a top 10 anyway, but the track is just really fast right now."
HOW BIG IS BEING A TOP 10 CAR TOMORROW? "Really important. Track position is everything here at Bristol. A guy gets sideways and there's a chain-reaction wreck, you can be 15th and get wrecked. I don't know."
THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEKEND. "We've always run really well here. We led a bunch of it in the spring and were running fourth when we got a flat tire and ended up ninth, which isn't a bad run with a flat tire, I guess. We feel like we've given one away here with pit stops and stuff, so we brought the same car back with the same setup. We just polished on it a little bit and tried a bunch of stuff in practice. We were real fast in qualifying. We're probably about fifth-fast in race trim."
HOW MUCH OF THE DAY RACE HERE AT BRISTOL TRANSLATES TO THE NIGHT RACE? "A lot of it does. The track is a little more grippy at night. It's not hot and slick, but the basic setup is really pretty close."
COULD YOU GET AWAY WITH STAYING OUT IN THE NIGHT RACE? IF YOU HAD A SIMILAR SITUATION AS YOU DID IN THE DAY RACE, COULD YOU GET AWAY WITH IT? Possibly, but we learned our lesson, I think. I think we're gonna stop this time."
ELLIOTT SADLER - No. 38 M&M's Taurus (Qualified 9th)
"We've still got a lot of work to do, so we'll see. We've been running good every week, but we just haven't had anything to show for it. I know we're gonna run good, we just need some luck."
A GOOD QUALIFYING RUN. THAT WOULD BE A GOOD PLACE TO START. "It is. I'm proud of my guys. I didn't even make a qualifying run in practice. We were like 42nd on the sheet. The guys pretty much just put the same air-pressure and everything in it that we qualified with on the pole here in the spring. Actually, I'm really happy because I didn't think we'd qualify that good. I'm proud of my guys. The car still drives good. This has been a good race. We've been running good. We just need something to go our way and I can't think of another place than Bristol for something good to happen."
WHAT ABOUT THE CHASE? "We came here to Bristol to try and win this doggone race because it's one of the most fun wins I've ever had. That's the kind of attitude we're gonna have. We just came here to run good. If it takes messed up pit strategy, that's what we're gonna do. Anything we can do to try to stay up front - lead some laps if we can and run up front - that's what it's all about this weekend. We know if we can run in the top five that the points will take care of themselves."
RICKY RUDD - No. 21 Motorcraft Genuine Parts Taurus (Qualified 5th) -"It was a great effort by everybody on the Wood Brothers Motorcraft team. They've been getting better and better. Like I said, I'm just real proud of the job they've done and we got a good lap in. I'm real excited about race setup."
DO WE MAKE TOO MUCH OF TRACK POSITION HERE? "As long as you've got a decent starting position - top 10 or top 15 - it's not bad. Where you get in trouble is it used to be a lot worse when you didn't have that lucky dog award. If you get in the back of the pack and you've got a fast car, but you just had a poor qualifying effort, you get in the back and you get stuck there. You can't move past the cars that are holding you up and here comes the leader. It used to be a real big deal and it still is a big deal to have track position. You don't have to work nearly as hard when you've got track position."
MARK MARTIN - No. 6 Viagra Taurus (Qualified 25th)
"I just want to thank Pat Tryson and the Viagra crew for getting that Ford as good as it was. The second lap was faster than the first, so that bodes well for the race. We could have done a lot better than that if we would have just been wired in a little bit better, but it was different than it was when we came here testing. But that's gonna be a better starting spot than I've had here in a long time. I just want to thank all of the fans. This is gonna be a good one this weekend. I think we've got a car that can run with 'em tomorrow night."
MATT KENSETH - No. 17 DeWalt Taurus (Qualified 1st)
"It's been a while. We've only won two poles. We won one at Dover a few years ago, so it feels great. It was a great lap. We've got a great car for the race tomorrow night. I didn't think it would qualify that fast, but everybody did a great job. It was pretty fun to beat the 24 off the pole because he's always known for being so good here."
WHERE DID THAT LAP COME FROM? "Well, a couple of things. First, we had a really good draw obviously. The weather is really good right now. We had a good car in practice and worked on race setup the whole time. Greg Biffle and Doug Richert really helped us out a lot. They gave us all the air pressures and all the stuff they did to qualify so good. We just threw that in our car and got a good lap."
CAN YOU STILL GET IN THE TOP 10? "Anything is possible. I still think it's kind of a stretch with all of those cars in between, but we'll have to see. We just have to run as hard as we can every week and try to lead some laps and win some races, hopefully. Maybe we'll get back in it and maybe we won't."
WHAT IS THE TEAM'S FRAME OF MIND FOR TOMORROW? "Everybody is pumped up. With this impound deal everything happens so fast. You come here and you practice two hours straight and then you work for four hours and then qualify. It's tough to get all that stuff done that fast and to do it right. They did a great job of turning this car around. The 16 helped us a lot. We used a lot of their stuff and the car was really good. I actually think I could have gone a little faster if I could do it again, but it was a great lap."
