He opened the day with a top-seven lap in the afternoon's first practice session. Only Shane Hmiel, Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards recorded faster laps than Menard in the afternoon's second session.

Qualifying is set for 12 noon EST Saturday with live coverage on SPEED-TV.Race time is 3 p.m. EST with live coverage on the FX cable network set to begin at 2:30 p.m. EST.

PAUL MENARD

"We were a little tight on old tires, but we should qualify well. For the race, we're going to free it up a little. This is a great track. It's really fun when your car is fast. With the softer tires we're running this year, the car really hooks up well on the bottom of the track during short runs. The race will be interesting, though. Once we all lsoe our grip, we'll be searching for (racing) lines. But that's the beauty of a track like this."
