Leffler Scores as the Highest Finishing Busch Regular for the Second Week in a Row
Jason Leffler and the #32 Braun Racing team came into Atlanta knowing they would face tough competition with 17 Cup drivers attempting to qualify for Saturday's Nicorette 300. "We knew we had to come out strong right from the start. We brought one of my favorite cars to Atlanta," stated Jason.
Jason and the #32 ABF U-Pack Chevy took to the track Friday for both practice sessions. Posting speeds of 180.387 in the first practice session (25th) and 182.615 in the second practice session (11th). The team was confident in the cars set-up and only made minor adjustments to tighten up the ABF machine prior to qualifying. Leffler qualified the #32 ABF U-Pack Chevy in the 21st spot for Saturday afternoon's race.
"We improved on our qualifying effort this weekend. It's tough starting in the back of the pack when you know you have a strong car," Jason explained.
The green flag flew for Saturday's Nicorette 300 and Leffler quickly began his move to the front, moving up to the 15th position by lap 39. When the caution flag flew on lap 41, Leffler brought the car down pit road for adjustments. The crew quickly went to work with four fresh "scuff" tires, fuel, an air pressure and track bar adjustments in hopes of loosening up the ABF Chevy.
Back out on the track, Leffler was able to move up a few spots to 11th but still battled handling conditions, this time radioing in a "tight handling race car". Crew Chief, Todd Lohse made the call to bring the #32 ABF U-Pack Chevy back down pit road for an air pressure adjustment when the caution flag flew again on lap 83. "The handling conditions shifted back and forth, at first the car was loose, then too tight and just when it seemed to turn itself around, we were tight again," explained Lohse.
After a few more pit stops on laps 105 and 150, the crew was able to fix the handling woe's and Jason set his sights on the front. Leffler drove the #32 ABF U-Pack Chevy into the top 10 on lap 156 and never looked back, crossing the finish line in the 6th position.
For the second week in a row, Jason was the top finishing Busch series regular and has moved up to the 6th position in the driver's standings.
