SCOTT RIGGS-10-Nestle Nesquik Ford Taurus (Qualified 16th) - YOU DON'T SEEM HAPPY WITH THAT LAP.
"No, not at all. We've been a little tight off of the corners, especially off of two over there since we've been here. Everything we do, we just can't quite seem to tap on what adjustment we need to fix it. I tried to make sure I had it wide open all the way off of two there. I got into turn one pretty good and I just did break the throttle just a little bit and I was back full throttle really early. I was bound and determined that I going to hold it down and got right up there against the wall and knew I wasn't going to make, and I just had to breathe it just a little bit and when you do that it just kills your momentum down the straightaway so bad that it cost us a lot of time. We didn't come here to qualify, we came here to race, but we just need to try to get our program back together here. It's sorta like it's fallen off and we can't quite seem to get our qualifying or finishing down. It's not a lack of effort on anybody's part on the Nesquik Ford."
IS TRACK POSITION AT THE START OF RACE LESS IMPORTANT AT A TRACK AS WIDE AS ATLANTA? "It's not as big, but traffic is still traffic and track position is track position and we need to have a better qualifying effort than that and never got it."
YOU MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT EARLIER THIS WEEK THAT YOU ARE GOING WINSTON CUP RACING NEXT YEAR. HOW DO YOU KEEP THAT FROM BEING A DISTRACTION IN YOUR QUEST FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP? "I think the team knows things are going to change for next year, but no matter what, a championship is good for everyone and anyone involved with this team. That's what we're trying to stay focused on. This is a championship-winning team and they know what the championship battle is all about and we just need to turn the corner and have some better finishes and better race cars than we've in the last couple of weeks."
KASEY KAHNE-38-Great Clips Ford Taurus (Qualified 13th) -
"I thought we would go faster than that. We were tight in morning practice and loosened it up a little bit and went a little too far. It was tough to run wide open around here. You can't run wide open here in the race except for maybe the first corner or two when your tires are good and you're getting up to speed, so we really worked on race setup today. In qualifying, I bet Harvick was real close to never lifting at all and we couldn't do that."
DOES THIS TRACK FEEL LIKE THE FASTEST ON THE BUSCH SERIES CIRCUIT FROM INSIDE THE COCKPIT? "I think it feels like the fastest track we run on. It definitely feels like we're running faster here than at Daytona."
JASON KELLER-57-Albertsons Ford Taurus (Qualified 26th) -
"It's not too good. I'm just disappointed right now, but it's not where you start but where you finish. Hopefully we can finish a little bit better than we started."
IS IT SOMETHING YOU FEEL CONFIDENT YOU CAN FIX IN HAPPY HOUR PRACTICE? "I hope, but I haven't been able to feel a balance in the race car. I'm really disappointed because I feel like we're in a tailspin right now, and I don't know where to go from here."
DO YOU FEEL IT'S THE SAME PROBLEM YOU HAD QUALIFYING IN KANSAS CITY? "Kansas City we qualified about as bad, but the car raced really good and hopefully that's the case here. It's not over with yet. It's not like we're going to pull the plug and give up, but it's disappointing. We came down here with a lot of confidence, but we have to run good. If we want to stay in this thing we've got to run good."
PIT STRATEGY HAS COME INTO PLAY HERE IN PAST RACES. CAN YOU USE THAT TO GET UP FRONT TOMORROW? "We took two tires last year and actually ran real well. We're going to have to be creative because we have to finish up front somehow. The groove widens out so much hopefully we'll be able to run right around the bottom. That's where we're going pass somebody. I'm just kinda bummed right now."
MATT KENSETH-17-Express Personnel Services Ford Taurus (Qualified 18th) -
"The car is better than it was in practice this morning, but it still isn't going to be good, maybe 15th or something. On the Busch side for us, I don't think that's very good. I don't know where the speed is at. It seems like the car is handling OK, but we don't have very much speed."
WITH WINSTON CUP QUALIFYING OCCURRING UNDER THE LIGHTS HOW MUCH WILL RUNNING BOTH RACES HELP YOU THIS WEEKEND? "Qualifying stuff won't help, but race setup somewhat might help. Both cars are kinda similar and we did a lot of race practice today during the sun, so I don't think it will hurt anything."
WALLY DALLENBACH-89-Mr. Clean AutoDry Carwash Ford Taurus (Qualified 19th) -
"I'm a little surprised we picked up on the second lap. I thought the first lap was better, and we didn't pick up much. That was about as much as I could get. I was flat in three and four and I only lifted a little bit in one and two. There's not a whole lot more I can do after that."
YOU ARE RUNNING A TEAM CAR TO MATT KENSETH THIS WEEKEND. HAS THAT HELPED? "No. Matt runs a completely different setup than I would. There's not a whole lot we can help each other on that. I just think we have a better powerplant under our hood, which made the biggest difference outside of Kansas. I think we're a little bit better there than we were in Kansas. I was talking to Matt a little bit this morning and we were comparing setups and we may as well be in different series."
DAVE BLANEY-31-Whelen Engineering Ford Taurus (Qualified 12th) - YOU SAID AFTER PRACTICE THIS MORNING THAT YOU HAD A LOOSE-HANDLING RACE CAR, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THE ADJUSTMENTS YOU MADE PRIOR TO QUALIFYING HELPED.
"It was loose. It was making my right foot lighter than it needed to be and it tends to do that here. They made a good stab at it and tightened it up a good bit and the car was quicker than me right there. I just needed to get with it; we needed a couple more tenths out of it, but that's going to be a pretty decent starting spot for the Whelen car and we'll go from there."
BOBBY HAMILTON, JR.-25-Team Marines Ford Taurus (Qualified 6th) -
"The track conditions changed from this morning and we didn't adjust to it. It was so good this morning. The getting-up-to-speed lap was great, I ran wide open and it cut and I was like, 'If we just do our normal deal like we did this morning,' and it just pushed on me right there in the center. You carry so much speed and it just screwed the whole corner up when I had to lift. We'll take a fifth. I shouldn't fall back but one or two maybe and get us a good pit stall. Like I said, this morning our fastest lap was untaped so we're not worried about today."
THIS IS THE SAME CAR THAT WAS WRECKED AT KANSAS A FEW WEEKS AGO, BUT HOW CLOSE IT IS TO BEING IDENTICAL? "This car is as close to being identical to the one in Kansas as it can be. They used the same crush panels; they just beat them out and painted them."
