HAMPTON, Ga. (March 12, 1999) Talk about a tough business. The No. 36 Stanley Tools Pontiac team and driver Tim Fedewa, both stalwarts in the NASCAR Busch Series over the past few years, will not be racing in Saturday's Yellow Freight 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Fedewa failed to make the field following Friday morning's Bud Second-Round Qualifying. Fedewa was 20th in the series point standings after the first three races of the season.
Fedewa has finished in the top-10 in the NASCAR Busch Series point standings the past two seasons. The No. 36 team, with driver Todd Bodine, finished second in the series championship standings two years ago.
Also failing to make the field for Saturday's race were: Andy Kirby, Hermie Sadler, Bobby Hamilton Jr., J.D. Gibbs, Freddie Query Jr., Shane Hall, Jeff Finley, Brad Loney, Kevin Grubb and Jeff Fuller.
Tony Raines, Phil Parsons, Kerry Earnhardt, Jason Jarrett, Jeff Purvis, Curtis Markham and Chuck Bown all made it in on provisionals. Markham took over the seat of the No. 29 Diamond Ridge Motorsports Chevrolet for Ted Musgrave for second-round qualifying. Bown took a past champion's provisional.
Several drivers picked up from their Thursday Bud Pole Qualifying times to get in the show. Of the 22 drivers who attempted to re-qualify, Elton Sawyer, Mike Dillon, Mark Krogh, Dick Trickle, Hank Parker Jr., Gus Wasson, Ken Schrader, Michael Waltrip, Johnny Benson, Glenn Allen and Bobby Hillin all improved upon their times from Thursday afternoon.
Schrader was the fastest drive in Bud Second-Round Qualifying on Friday, turning a fast lap of 186.047 mph. Parker was second-fastest at 185.499 mph, followed by Benson (184.960), Trickle (184.321) and Mark Krogh (184.260).
