AMBROSE BRAVES BRISTOL NIGHT RACE
Marcos Ambrose will tackle one of the fiercest races on the NASCAR calendar when he races in the Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee this weekend.
Some say that the Bristol night race is the toughest challenge in the NASCAR season, but Ambrose sees it as one of the events he looks forward to all season long.
Ambrose currently sits 10th in the 2008 NASCAR Nationwide Series points standings and the Bristol race is known as a treacherous event, so a finish is vital to the Australian's ambitions of finishing in the top 10 for a second consecutive season.
In the corresponding event last season Ambrose qualified well in 12th position, but was classified in 37th position after a heavy crash in the race when he spun and was collected by another car.
Q & A with MARCOS AMBROSE
Q: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST THOUGHT WHEN YOU WENT TO BRISTOL FOR THE FIRST TIME?
MA: "It's changed since then. It was bumpy and rough with cracks in it and it had crazy transitions into the turns, so it was a pretty nasty track. I remember the first time on the track I had to stop after like eight laps because I had to breathe and had to have a rest to think about things for a while.
"It was a real intimidating place. It was back when it was one groove only and could only run on the very bottom, so it has changed a little bit since then but it's just a really great place. I went there as a fan in 2003 and watched the races there, so it was a real buzz to get back there and actually drive the track."
Q: WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION TO ALL THE GRANDSTANDS AND THE OVERALL FEEL OF BRISTOL?
MA: "It's just an unbelievable venue when you think that they can fit that many people in such a small area (ED: Bristol seats 170,000 people around a half-mile track).
"It's just a great atmosphere. It's really loud and there's always a lot of action on the race track. I had some fans in to watch the first race this year and they got debris in their beer can. That's all they could talk about -- how they were sitting so close that they got debris in their beer car, so Bristol is a great place.
"It's one of the best tracks we go to for feel because it's just a great atmosphere."
