Tammy Jo Kirk became the first woman to qualify for a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race today. She ran good practice times on Friday and Saturday morning. She was the 52nd driver to attempt qualification. She qualified ninth on the grid with a time of 28.805 and a speed of 124.978.

Felix "Nighthawk" Giles the first Afro-American to attempt to qualify for a truck race had a very difficult weekend. His speeds were consistantly slow, and his team was plagued with problems. Shortly before the end on Saturady morning practice, he brushed the wall in turn 2 damaging the right front corner of his truck. His crew got it repaired and he was the last driver to attempt qualification. His speed was 102.535.

Toby Porter had a great first qualifying lap of 125.492; but then put his truck in the turn one wall at the beginning of his second lap. He will start from the 4th position, if the crew gets it repaired over night. Damage was to the left front.

Tobey Bulter's truck owner, Ken Schrader announced that Purolator would be the major sponsor of the #51 truck. The new PureOne premium brand of filters would be the signage on the truck. After this announcement at noon, Tobey's quaflication attempt end in the second turn of the first lap. He was taken to the infleid care facility and released. [His new sponsors were behind me when this happened. Purolator is not new to racing, so they knew what to expect. After concern about Tobey, the only other comment was that they wished he had gotten one lap in before the crash.]
