Musgrave, Team Mopar Looking To Regain Winning Form At Memphis
MILLINGTON, TN (June 15,2001) - When you're used to winning, finishing anywhere else becomes a bitter pill to swallow. For Ted Musgrave and the No. 1 Mopar Performance Parts Dodge Ram, nothing could be closer to the truth.
Musgrave, who won three of the first five NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races this season, has been struggling since dominating the Ram Tough 200 at Gateway International Speedway May 6. Heading into this weekend's Memphis 200 at Memphis Motorsports Park, Musgrave is eager to get back to Victory Lane.
"We just haven't been performing up to our full potential," said Musgrave. "This team is the best in the Craftsman Truck Series garage, we just need to dig a little deeper and have a few breaks go our way and we'll be back up to a championship caliber team."
While Musgrave has never raced on the .75-mile Memphis oval, the Winston Cup veteran has had plenty of success on the like-kind Richmond (VA) International Raceway.
"I feel good about going to Memphis," Musgrave stated. "It's going to be a lot like Richmond. Both tracks are very similar and I've got two poles in the Winston Cup car at Richmond. A lot of what I know about Richmond will transfer over to Memphis. The set-ups will be very similar and the way you have to drive Memphis will be very much like the way you drive Richmond. My crew chief Fred Wanke has been to Memphis several times, so his knowledge about the track and the way he sets the truck up will be paramount."
Musgrave hopes a good run at Memphis will derail the bad luck that has followed his Mopar Dodge since the win at Gateway. The string of disappointments has relegated Musgrave back to seventh in the NCTS championship standings. Musgrave has stayed in close quarters with leaders, however, only 30 points out of the Top-5.
"We certainly aren't counting ourselves out of the championship," Musgrave said. "Anything can happen, all we need to do is get ourselves back on top of the board and get some more wins and we'll be right back in it. As long as we stay within striking distance we'll be ok. Right now, we're only 190 points out of the lead so it's really a tight race."
Last week, Musgrave was handed a tall task returning to his Winston Cup roots, piloting the No. 7 Nations Rent Ford Taurus for his Ultra Motorsports teammate Mike Wallace at the Pocono 500 in Pocono, PA. Experience was the key for Musgrave, who qualified 15th and finished 29th in his first Winston Cup appearance this season.
"The only reason I went to Pocono was to help Ultra Motorsports figure out their Winston Cup program and give Mike (Wallace) a little feedback. Those guys have been struggling and Jimmy (Smith) thought I might be able toassist with getting that program headed back in the right direction. I think we made some accomplishments with the Cup car and now it's time to make some gains with the Mopar Dodge. What we need to do is start racking up some more wins and that's exactly what I'm looking to do at Memphis, win."
The Memphis 200 at Memphis Motorsports Park will take the green flag Saturday, June 23 at 1 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The tenth race of the 2001 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule will be telecast live on ESPN and broadcast on MRN Radio worldwide.
