Richmond, VA - When the morning practice for tonight's Kroger 200 at the Richmond International Raceway was finished the #46 Acxiom/Computer Associates team was left scratching their heads, but, when qualifying completed late this afternoon, the high-fives were flying.
After ending the morning practice 19th on the sheet, crew chief, Danny Gill and driver, Dennis Setzer were left guessing at what they needed to do to get a handle on their #46 Chevrolet Silverado. Dennis had radioed in several times that the truck was "very" tight in the middle of the corner. Gill and Setzer got together between practice and qualifying and decided on an aggressive spring change that elevated them to the top of the board. In fact, the speed picked up a full-half second from the morning practice session.
Setzer turned a lap of 22.248 seconds at a speed of 121.259 m.p.h., which was considerably better than the morning time of 22.690. The pole was the sixth of Gill's career and the third for Setzer (Indianapolis '99 and Kansas City '01). Setzer and Gill have combined for two of those poles since working together at Morgan/Dollar Motorsports.
"We weren't sure if the change was going to hurt us or help us, but when I drove off into turn one I immediately knew it was the right call," said Setzer. "I'm impressed with the job the guys did today on the truck. We made some changes, and obviously they were the right changes. The truck really handled great for those two laps, but that is the scary part. We know we're good for two laps, now we wait and see what we've got for 200 laps," Setzer stated.
The pole was the second of the season for the #46 Morgan/Dollar Motorsports team who also started first for the inaugural race at the Kansas Speedway in July. The team reached victory lane earlier this season as well at the Memphis Motorsports Park during the running of the Memphis 200. That victory was the sixth of Setzer's truck series career and first-ever for Morgan/Dollar Motorsports.
The Kroger 200 under-the-lights at the Richmond International Raceway is set to get underway tonight beginning at 8 p.m. EST on ESPN2. A live radio broadcast can be found on MRN Radio affiliates beginning at 7:30 p.m. EST.
