Watkins Glen, NY (June 23, 2000) - Consistency is the main reason Randy Tolsma and the No. 25 CITGO-SUPERGARD Motor Oil Dodge team are seventh in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series point standings. In Tolsma's last six starts his average finishing position has been 6th. Now that the season has reached its halfway point, the team is reflecting on lessons learned and directing their focus to the remainder of the season.
In the first four races of the season, Tolsma's average finish was 19th. "There has definitely been an upswing in our season. In addition to the persistent hard work of this team, it seems the breaks recently have been going in our favor instead of against us. At the beginning of the season, we'd walk through the garage and the other guys would joke about our bad luck, telling us to stay away from them, acting like we were jinxed or something," Tolsma said with a smile. "The bad luck issue was like a black cloud hanging over our heads. It's amazing how my team stuck together and became stronger as a result of misfortunes."
Tolsma will head into the BULLY HILL VINEYARDS 150 at Watkins Glen this weekend with one thing in mind - victory lane. "We have been so close to winning so many times this year. This team is on the threshold; it's just a matter of time before the CITGO-SUPERGARD Motor Oil Dodge is parked in the winners circle. We can't help but hope it will be sooner than later though."
With Tolsma notching seven top-10 finishes in 12 races, he is in turn earning the respect of his fellow competitors. "I try to race as clean and considerate as possible. Racing dirty only makes you a target. We try to work with other teams as best as we can, because you never know when you'll need a favor in return."
Tolsma's nice guy mentality is genuine, and it shines through both on and off the track. In reference to NASCAR Night in the Heights in Elmira, NY, Tolsma said, "Race festivals like this are just awesome. This particular event always has a huge turnout. I love to go there and have one-on-one time with the fans that support our sport. It is a way to give back to the community and let them know how important they are."
Bud pole qualifying for the BULLY HILL VINEYARDS 150 at Watkins Glen took place Friday, June 23, 2000, with Tolsma qualifying 13th. The event will take place on Saturday, June 24, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. EDT.
