Timothy Peters claimed his first win of the 2014 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season on Saturday in the Fred's 250 at Talladega Superspeedway. With drafting help from Tayler Malsam on a green-white-checker restart, Peters moved out in front of Ryan Blaney and was able to remain on point for the sprint to the finish.

"I was committed to the No. 17 (Peters)," Malsam said. "I was going to push him as far as I could."

Peters finished second in the other superspeedway race this year which was the season-opener at Daytona International Speedway in February.

"I can't thank everybody on this team enough," Peters said. "It feels good to come back to a superspeedway and improve by one spot."

Malsam finished second, Spencher Gallagher was third, Tyler Reddick fourth and Blaney rounded out the top-five.

First incident

Reddick started on the pole, but Malsam led most of the laps before the first yellow flag on lap 12 when Blaney retook the lead. On that lap, German Quiroga, Ron Hornaday, Mason Mingus, and Ryan Sieg all got swept up in a wreck.

Reddick wound up in the back on the restart after a pit road speeding penalty. It was the first of two speeding penalties for Reddick, with the other coming during a cycle of green-flag stops around the halfway point.

Trouble for championship contenders

Series points leader Matt Crafton also had trouble on pit road during the first caution, sustaining damage from contact with another truck. Crafton was penalized later in the race when he was pushed by Joe Nemechek, which is illegal. With an assist from a caution soon after with 37 laps to go, he was able to remain on the lead lap. His teammate and title rival Johnny Sauter fell out early with an engine failure, caused by debris puncturing his radiator.

Blaney, like his Brad Keselowski Racing teammate Reddick, was also slapped with a pit road speeding penalty under the cycle of green-flag stops and wound up a lap down. He managed to get back on the lead lap with the caution with 37 to go.

"I made a mistake early, speeding on pit road," Blaney said.

End of the race scramble

John Wes Townley, Peters and Darrell Wallace Jr. were up to the top-three by the time the fourth caution of the race came with 14 laps to go. Townley was able to remain up front until another caution a few laps later. When the race returned to green, Peters moved into the lead, while Townley dropped back. One of those late cautions involved Ben Kennedy, who suffered a massive impact with the front stretch wall, sending his truck up on its side.

The yellow flag waved one more time with four laps to go, causing a GWC. Peters restarted in the lead with Blaney alongside in second. In all, there were six cautions for 22 laps of the 94-lap race.

"I thought we were going to have a great shot at the win," Blaney said.

Erik Jones finished sxith, Chris Fonaine was seventh, Townley eighth, Wallace ninth and Nemechek 10th.

Points outlook

With a 14th-place finish, Crafton maintained his points lead. Blaney moved up to second in points, displacing Crafton's ThorSport Racing teammate, Johnny Sauter. Blaney left Talladega 16 points behind Crafton. Sauter's engine blew early in the race after a bolt went through his radiator. Sauter dropped to fourth in the standings, 36 points out of the lead with four races remaining. Wallace Jr. is third in the standings, 28 points out of first.
