DOVER, DE (May 25, 2001) As the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series rolls into Dover Downs International Speedway for the MBNA E-Commerce 200, Ted Musgrave will rely on experience in hopes of steering his No. 1 Mopar Performance Parts Dodge Ram toward Victory.
"I don't care if you're in a Busch car, Winston Cup, Truck or anything else at Dover, it's wild," said Musgrave. "Dover is a racetrack where the driver is on the edge of his seat all the time. It's a fast racetrack. There's a lot of banking and you can get in trouble pretty easily."
Over an 11-year stint in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, Musgrave has amassed 21 starts at Dover and scored a career best third-place finish in1995. In last year's fall Winston Cup race at the famed high-banked concrete oval, Musgrave steered the No. 01 BellSouth Chevrolet to a 23rd-place finish after qualifying 33rd.
"I've got a lot of laps at Dover, kind of like the case was at Darlington," Musgrave stated. "I may have the upper hand as far as the experience level, but it's just like everywhere else we go. At Darlington, we unloaded and we weren't fast, but we worked at it and got the Mopar Performance Parts Dodge up to speed and I can see that happening again there at Dover. From watching the race last year, I'm excited to go there and try this."
Not only will experience play a huge roll in the outcome of the MBNA E-Commerce 200, but it's going to take nerves of steel to reach the Winner's Circle. In last year's Truck Series event at Dover, a late-race melee allowed rookie Kurt Busch to grab the checkered flag after tangling with Mike Wallace on the front stretch.
"It's a daring type of racetrack,"explained Musgrave. "The guy that's fearless will run fast. That's not to say he's going to win the race. The guy who has his head on his shoulders and can run fast is going to win the race at Dover. It's a track where you can actually get pretty aggressive with it. And after watching the finish from the Truck race last year, I know it's going to be exciting."
The MBNA E-Commerce 200 at Dover Downs International Speedway will take the green flag Friday, June at 4 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The seventh race of the 2001 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule will be broadcast live by MRN Radio and telecast on a same-day, tape-delayed basis by ESPN at 8 p.m.Eastern Time.
