Eager to try their luck at the famed Milwaukee Mile, David Starr and Spears Motorsports head for Milwaukee, Wisc., and the running of the Black Cat Fireworks 200, Round 9 of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series on Friday, June 25.
"I am really looking forward to racing at Milwaukee again," says Starr, who was forced to sit out last year's race due to injuries suffered during a test session. "We raced here in 2002 and took 6th. This time out we would love to put the Spears Chevy Silverado right at the front of the field."
Flying the Spears Manufacturing banner for the past two years, Starr, one of the most popular drivers on the circuit, is well-versed in what it takes to win. "The Milwaukee Mile is one of the most challenging tracks on the circuit," he smiles "It has really wide corners and its very flat. Doing well requires a truck that turns good in the center and has good bite off the corners. A good chassis and a strong engine are all important, and we have both."
One of the few one day shows on the circuit, racers both qualify and race the same day. "It is reminiscent of the old Winston West days," says Starr. "Your crew really has to be on their toes and that's what's so good about the Spears Motorsports crew. They definitely rock. They have been doing a great job, both in and out of the pits and I have no doubt that they will have my Spears Chevy in tip-top form come race time."
Sitting just 45 points out of the top 10, Starr is determined to move up. " We gained one spot last week," he says. "This week I want more! We've got 16 more races and it is anyone's game. I have no doubt that with the help and technology we are getting from Chevrolet, the ability of Dave McCarty and the entire crew and the full support that Wayne and Connie Spears give, we can make our way to the front before the year is out.
Qualifying for the Black Cat Fireworks 200 takes place on Friday, June 25 at 6PM (ET) and racing action gets underway at 9PM (ET).
