BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (April 10, 1999) Quotes from selected drivers following Saturday's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Dodge California Truck Stop 300 at Mesa Marin Raceway:
RICK CARELLI No. 6 RE/MAX International Chevrolet
"Man, I was workin'. We had trouble making adjustments. It was tight and then we got loose. Rodney (Haygood, crew chief) said at the end, 'Let's put some lefts on and go for it. I said earlier today we had a good truck. You know last night we qualified in the dark with snow and ice and whatever but it came together today. You know to beat (Ron) Hornaday here is really gratifying for me, he's won so many races here. I saw them (Hornaday and Harvick) coming and we were running down on laps. I said 'we're goin', we're goin'.' I wasn't stopping.
"This win means a lot to me. We've had a great truck the last few races since we started this season. At Homestead, we were good but we weren't good enough to win. At Phoenix, I know we had a good enough truck to win but we had mechanical failure. Last week at Evergreen, pits stops killed us. I'd come in 5th or 6th and come out 12th. The guys got together on their own and worked on it for this week. Today, this is how I remember racing."
KEVIN HARVICK No. 98 Porter-Cable Power Tools Ford
"The fans got to see some good NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series racing today. We wanted to win this thing really bad in the Porter-Cable Ford. Me and Hornaday were racing pretty hard and Carelli got by us. That's the way it goes. The groove up top wasn't too bad, but you had to be on the bottom and be real easy on the throttle. The last lap Ron drove it in a little bit too far and washed up. We wanted to win this thing really bad but we'll take 2nd and go down the road."
STACY COMPTON No. 86 Royal Crown Cola Dodge
"We had a good truck, we just didn't have quite enough for them. I really did not know that Carelli was there until the end. This is a great win for him and the team. Another top-5 -- we are going to keep digging and we are going to win one of these things here soon. This was a great race for the fans. They got to watch Hornaday, Harvick and myself battle and I think that we are in a good position to go to Martinsville."
RON HORNADAY No. 16 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet
"I drove hard all day. We needed right side tires (at the end) and didn't get 'em. I'll tell you what -- I knew Ricky was tough because he put on right sides (actually left side tires) and we didn't have nothing to put on. At Mesa Marin, when you're out of tires, it's definitely over. I'm glad to see Ricky won."
JIMMY HENSLEY No. 43 Dodge Motorsports Dodge
"We were tight all day. Then we got loose and we fixed that, but we just could not get balanced all day. The crew kept working and I kept driving. We came home with a top-5 finish and we are proud of that."
DENNIS SETZER No. 1 Mopar Dodge
"We had great pit stops and a strong truck, but it was just unfortunate at the end. Some of the trucks behind us took on tires and I didn't. But we had to take the chance rather than give up the track position. We had a pretty good day."
JACK SPRAGUE No. 24 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet
"I did everything I could do to lose this race. I overshot my pit and blew a pit stop and I missed the pit out board (and was penalized to the end of the longest line on the ensuing restart)."
MIKE WALLACE No. 2 Team ASE Ford
"That wasn't bad -- it was just an aggressive race. The last set of left sides we put on just didn't hit like the previous set. We thought it was going to be a big plus for us, and it hurt us and got us loose. We didn't need any of those yellows there at the end -- we needed all laps of green. It didn't work out, but jack (Sprague) only finished one spot ahead of us so hopefully the points stay the same going into Martinsville. We should still be third."
BUTCH MILLER No. 18 DANA Corporation Dodge
"We still have some things that we have to work on. We were hoping for a little better result, but we will take another top-10 and move on to Martinsville. We got tangled with the No. 3 truck and spun around, but it was not his fault. In fact, he came over and apologized because he felt so bad."
KEVIN CYWINSKI No. 31 Auto Trim Design Ford
"I'll tell you what -- we had to work for it. This Auto Trim Ford F-150 was tight at the beginning of the race. The crew pulled a spring rubber about halfway and the thing worked really good -- we just couldn't get our lap back. Those guys, Carelli and Hornaday, were strong all day long, but we ended up the first truck a lap down. We'll take it and move on."
