Sprague Finally Finds His Groove At Martinsville Speedway

MARTINSVILLE, VA (October 21, 2006) -- At the start of the Kroger 200 Saturday, Jack Sprague wasn't too found of Martinsville Speedway. By day's end, it was on the veteran driver's list of favorite tracks.

Sprague started on the pole and turned in a dominating performance to capture the Kroger 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Martinsville Speedway. It was his 27th truck series win, but his first on the difficult .526-mile Martinsville oval.

"I don't like this place, although I do now," said Sprague, who picked up $50,900 for his second win of the season. "It might now be one of my favorite places. I've really struggled here. I've run third here four or five times. I just can't get around this place real good. But this thing was hooked up good today."

The 42-year-old Sprague led the first 33 laps, retook the lead on lap 129 and never trailed again. But David Starr, who finished second, was putting pressure on the winner down the stretch.

Rookie Erik Darnell finished third followed by NASCAR NEXTEL Cup regular Mark Martin and Johnny Benson.

Ted Musgrave led from lap 34 to lap 138, but was penalized for an improper restart and had to come to the pits for a stop-and-go penalty on lap 139. Musgrave wound up 15th.

Rounding out the top 10 were Kyle Busch in sixth, Mike Skinner seventh, Denny Hamlin, eighth, Rick Crawford, ninth and Chase Miller 10th. Busch and Hamlin, along with Martin, are all in the Chase for the NEXTEL Cup and will be racing in Sunday's SUBWAY 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race at Martinsville Speedway.

Sprague's margin of victory was .416 seconds. There were 12 caution periods for 67 laps.

Sunday's SUBWAY 500 at Martinsville Speedway is sold out.
