Hanes 250 Friday quotes

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Sept. 26, 1997) Quotes from selected drivers following Busch Pole Qualifying for the Hanes 250 at Martinsville Speedway:

RICH BICKLE No. 17 Sears DieHard Chevrolet

"This is just the type of thing this team needs right now. The entire DieHard team has worked so hard all season, and especially over the past two weeks. We came to Martinsville to test last week and it obviously paid dividends today. I owe a lot to Dave Rezendes, who came up here with us last week to help with the test. I was just getting over my appendectomy and him coming with us allowed me to heal and be ready to race this weekend. "Now we can concentrate on the race. This should be a good track for us. We need solid finishes every step of the way to catch Jack Sprague in the points race. A win here would be a great start."

ERNIE IRVAN No. 28 Federated Auto Parts Ford

"We're second, right? Well that's pretty good. We haven't run this truck hardly at all. Basically the focus has been on trying to get fast. There is just no better way to do it except for me to come and run a little bit. Obviously we've got good stuff. We're starting a new motor program today. Larry Wallace is the one who built this one. It's an all new package. Maybe we can look at what we'll do next year."

MIKE BLISS No. 2 Team ASE Ford

"I think the Robert Yates motor pulled us through that one. The truck was good, but for some reason I felt off. But the truck was good and the motor was real good. We'll have a good truck here for the race. I'm excited."

RON HORNADAY No. 16 NAPA Brakes Chevrolet

"Well, we didn't run as fast as we did in practice. We were a little off, but I'll take it. I think we have a good race setup and we'll be ok tomorrow."

JOE RUTTMAN No. 80 LCI Teleommunications Ford

"That was better than I thought we'd do by a bunch. If I'd have got (Turns) 3 and 4 we would have run awfully good. I missed 3 and 4 real bad. If I would have got it we would have been good. We would have set it on the pole. But this was about two tenths better than I thought I was gonna do."

DAVID GREEN No. 37 Red Man Golden Blend Chevrolet

"This has been a tough day jumping back and fourth. I ran the truck here this morning and then had to go on the other side and get the car setup to get into the race. Then come back and qualify the truck. We haven't had much time to get the truck ready but I'm happy with it."

STACY COMPTON No. 86 Valvoline Ford

"We'll take it. I'll tell you what these guys at Impact Motorsports put me in a good truck week in and week out. Sooner or later you're going to see this Ford up front. We're pretty excited right now. I don't think it will stand for the pole, but hopefully it'll put us up there in the top-5, top-10. If it cools down much it may get a little quicker, but we'll definitely take it right now."

JACK SPRAGUE No. 24 Quaker State Chevrolet

"Loose.. Loose and looser."

RICK CARELLI No. 6 Re-Max Chevrolet

"We didn't run as quick this afternoon as we did this morning. But we're up there pretty good. Most of the time this year we've been starting way back and fightin' our way to the front."
