Hanes 250 Quotebook
MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Sept. 27, 1997) The following are quotes from selected drivers after the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Hanes 250 at Martinsville Speedway.
RICH BICKLE No. 17 DieHard Chevrolet
"The Darrell Waltrip crew was perfect. We gave them (competition) a real Wisconsin butt kickin' today."
"This win will really perk up our team and put some pressure on Jack (Sprague) in the series points chase."
DARRELL WALTRIP Owner - No. 17 Sears DieHard Chevrolet
"Hey, you guys! I'm here! Look I'm in Victory Lane! Man this is great. (points to moisture on shirt) This ain't champaign, it's sweat!"
ERNIE IRVAN No. 28 Federated Auto Parts Ford
"We had a good truck. This Federated Auto Parts Ford, the guys did a good job. It just shows we've got good trucks. Boris (teammate Boris Said) has been doing a good job. Mike was a little bit better than I was. Any time you had a caution it got a little slippery. I just happened to make a good run on him on that restart. We had a third place truck today, and we were happy to come home third, but we got second. The truck got real tight. We tried to loosen it up during the half time, but it didn't work."
WHAT HAPPENED THE LAST COUPLE OF LAPS?
"These truck deals always end up like that you know. We had a good run. Mike kind of left the door open. He got real loose on the restart so he left it wide open."
MIKE BLISS No. 2 Team ASE Ford
"We just used the tires up on the restart. I spun the tires on the start and Ernie got by me. Ernie wanted second I guess. Third is worse than second. It don't matter. We couldn't have won anyway. They (Bickle) were fast. All in all it was a pretty good day. The ASE Ford was good and the Robert Yates motor was strong."
JIMMY HENSLEY No. 43 Cummins Dodge
"I'm happy with my fourth place finish; I just wished I could have done a little better for the hometown crowd. We had a good truck, and we could have probably contended for the win if we'd had a few more laps. But all in all I'm real pleased with the end results. It's always good to finish in the top five."
BOBBY HAMILTON No. 51 Southern Pride Trucking Chevrolet
"We had a good truck and we had a good time. I just couldn't race much - kept getting hot in traffic. We go after it for a while that it would get too hot and we'd have to back off and let it cool down. The old truck done good and I'd like to thank Chevrolet, Goodyear and everybody. Everybody did a good job - we didn't have to touch the brakes once the whole day."
BUTCH MILLER No. 20 Orleans Hotel and Casino Chevrolet
"We lost something over night and we haven't figured it out. We has THE fastest truck in last night's practice session and it didn't continue on til today and we don't know why. Wee probably three-quarters of a second faster than we ran all day long. We were a little disappointed at that but happy."
JAY SAUTER No. 3 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet
"These Goodwrench guys gave me an excellent truck. We just had to be careful. It wasn't perfect but they kept on working on it. I tried to stay out of trouble and we would up in the top ten."
KENNY IRWIN No. 98 Raybestos/Ford Credit Ford
"It was an okay race. We didn't have that good a truck at the start, but we didn't get in any trouble. We didn't go a lap down. That's what actually made the day pretty good. We come away with a top ten finish. About the middle of the first half I didn't think we stood a chance of doing worth crap today, but it just worked out. We were just bad loose. We got it tightened up, but we needed something else. I still don't know what I'd change if we went back out right now."
STACY COMPTON No. 86 Valvoline Ford
"We were pleased with it (the finish). Of course we always want a little bit better. I can't say enough about Troy (Selberg) and this Impact Motorsports team. We brought a new truck up here, we had a good run. We ran in the top five the first segment, and we just basically sat there and rode. We were trying to figure out what the truck was going to do for the second segment. We felt like we were in good shape so we just made some minor adjustments, air pressure adjustments. It looks like we had a right rear shock go bad. I hate it because like I say, we really had a good truck up here. We come up here; there were 53 trucks here. We'll bring this Ford home in ninth place any time. It was a top ten finish. We'll build on it this week and try and improve on it."
YOU CAME IN RIGHT AT THE END OF THE RACE. WHY?
"We were right at the end of the lead lap trucks, and we thought we could get it tightened up. We didn't realize it was a shock. We put some rounds of bite in it trying to get it tightened up so that hopefully we could have a shot at Kenny (Irwin) right there at the end. But it just never would take a set. We were just way too loose."
JACK SPRAGUE No. 24 Quaker State Chevrolet
"It was a bad day, I guess, but it could have been worse. It looked like we were going to get out of here with a fifth place finish which would have been great.
"Rick (Carelli) blew a tire, I guess, and he came off the wall and collected me pretty hard and I ended up tenth. Now we get to go on a road course and I've been able gain points on road courses .so maybe we can do it again."
JOE RUTTMAN No. 80 LCI International Ford
"About ten laps into the race I was down in the dumps. It ran about 25 or 30 laps just super bad. We lost a lap, and then it decided to start running again. We haven't figured out just what the problem is. We thought about coming in, but decided no. Then we kind of threw the dice in the second half and changed it, and probably shouldn't have. We hurt ourself when we were trying to get our lap back against Bickle, but he was really hooked. We would have had to put a miracle to it to get him back. But we finished."
CHUCK BOWN No. 99 Exide Batteries Ford
"We were kind of hanging in there on the lead lap. Pretty far in there was a caution. We didn't have very good track position so we stopped to make a little chassis adjustment thinking we weren't giving up anything anyway. They stopped me at the end of pit road so that I wouldn't gain track position, and it stalled. I couldn't get it refired. The starter motor wouldn't work. By the time the guys could push me we were a lap down, and from then on we just never had track position and struggled. There will be better days. It could have been worse, but I would sure liked it to be better."
TONY RAINES No. 19 Pennzoil Dodge
"It was a long day at the track. And it certainly wasn't my day today. We kept having to replace the right front tire. We think the breaks are getting so hot that it's breaking the bead on the wheel. After testing here 10 days ago we knew the breaks would get hot, so we tried to alleviate that by sending more coolant to the breaks. It obviously didn't help."
RICK CRAWFORD No. 14 Circle Bar Motel & RV Park Ford
"We were trying to impress the Cup side of the fence. We started way back, but the truck was running real good, and we were moving to the front I guess. We come off of four side-by-side with another truck and there was the 18 truck dead. I did all I could to miss him and not cause a big accident, but we were caught up in it."
BOB KESELOWSKI No. 29 Mopar Dodge
"Well, this is not how we wanted to follow up our win from last race. I couldn't do anything right today. We burned two rearends and broke a motor today. I'm so disappointed. We're going to have to regroup and go out on our West Coast swing."
JAMIE SKINNER No. 93 Llumar Chevrolet
"I liked it a whole lot! This Chevrolet was hooked up today. I just tried to stay on the lead lap and wait til the last fifty laps to try to do anything. It's unfortunate for us not finishing but we will just try it again."
RON HORNADAY No. 16 NAPA Brake Chevrolet
"I don't know what happened but it wasn't what I thought it was. About 20 laps into the race, I started getting some smoke. About 30 laps in, I started to lean on it to catch the leaders it started vibrating. I guess we lost a belt off the rear end. We'll try to get it back together and get some laps in."
JOHNNY BENSON No. 18 Dana Dodge
"We broke something in the right front, either a tire or an "A" frame. It was one of those deals, where the truck was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and there wasn't any stopping. We had a top three truck, easily. We wrecked the front end; there wasn't any reason for the rear end to get wrecked too. I'm glad for the opportunity to drive Kurt's (Roehrig) truck again. Every time I've driven for him he's had great equipment."
MICHAEL WALTRIP No. 1 Citgo Ford
"We messed up something in the back end because it started making an awful racket right after that. Also when I got hit it knocked the toe off. We had a good truck."
ARE YOU GOING TO RUN AGAIN THIS SEASON WITH THE TRUCKS?
"Yeah, I'm going to take this truck to the West Coast. If there isn't too much damage we can get and ready and go out there. I don't know if I'll go to Vegas (where he ran last year). Right now we're scheduled to go to Homestead with the Busch car so we'll do one or the other."
