AMBROSE IMPRESSIVE DURING PRACTICE FOR TRUCK DEBUT
Australian Marcos Ambrose has begun his debut weekend in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia with an impressive display during practice today.
Ambrose, a dual V8 Supercar Champion, immediately began to repay the Woods Brothers/JTG Racing outfit for the faith they have put in him by setting the 12th fastest time during opening practice on the half-mile circuit aboard Ford F150.
During the Rookie practice session Ambrose continued to improve his time by a further tenth of a second to post a time just shy of his Woods Brothers/JTG Racing team-mate and former USAC National Speedway Midget champion, Bobby East.
With positions separated by minute amounts Ambrose continually improved his speed throughout the day to set the 18th fastest time during final practice, 0.215 behind the fastest time set by Johnny Benson in the 39-car field.
"I was shaking in my boots out there, it's a baptism in fire but we did better than what I thought we would," said Ambrose.
"During the first practice I simply rolled around to get a feel for the truck and the race track. I'd never driven on an oval track before I'd arrived in the states, not even in a speedway car, but our testing has gone well and I've got a great team behind me.
"Throughout the day my pace continually improved and hopefully I can keep my nose clean, qualify for the race and soak as much information up as possible and learn everything I can."
Ambrose will participate in his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck qualifying session at Noon (local time) Saturday followed by the Kroger 250 to begin at 3:30pm.
Local time in Martinsville, USA is 15 hours behind AEST.
