Small starts 17th in Las Vegas 350, scores fourth in Winston West Shootout.
LAS VEGAS, NV Jason Small will start the Las Vegas 350 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway from the 17th position on Saturday. Small turned a lap of 34.202 seconds, which averages 157.886 miles per hour on the 1.5-mile tri-oval. The 17th position is the best start Small has had since a 15th place start at Memphis Motorsports Park in June.
Small is one of two drivers to attempt double duty this weekend, also running The Orleans 150 NASCAR Winston West Series event on Saturday. Small started the race from 14th and raced his way into the top-5 before taking the lead after a round of yellow flag pit stops precipitated when leader Brendan Gaughan blew an engine on lap 58.
"It has been a while since I had that much fun in a racecar," Small said. "It is great to get in there and be competitive and lead some laps. We had a great car and great pit stops. We made a big adjustment on that last stop and the car really responded. We could pass up on the high side and that is what you need to do to be successful here at Vegas."
Small hopes to parlay his success in the Winston West race into a top-10 finish in the Truck Series event.
"We are definitely gaining on it," he said. "We had a good final practice and learned some things. With the laps we had in race conditions tonight, I think we gained some knowledge and some confidence for the race on Sunday. Our qualifying run is about where we qualify every week, but I think we have a truck that can run up into the top ten."
The Las Vegas 350 will start just after 5 pm ET and will be seen live on ESPN. The race will also be broadcast on NASCAR Radio on XM Satellite and on MRN Radio affiliates nationwide.
