Kansas City, KS - Ron Hornaday, Jr., No. 33 AES HR Solutions Silverado, easily had a top-three truck today in the O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway and ran that way the first one-third of the 167-lap race. But a pit road speeding pass-through penalty put him a lap down to the leaders he has just been battling. Several long green-flag runs made it difficult for the two-time champion to regain the spots he lost.
Once the Hornaday got back on the lead lap and restarted in 13th position with approximately 60 laps remaining, he made up ground as one of the fastest trucks on the track. When the checkered flew, Hornaday was in sixth position.
Matt Crafton, No. 88 Menards Silverado, finished 10th followed by Brendan Gaughan, No. 77 South Point Hotel Silverado in 11th.
RON HORNADAY, NO. 33 AES HR SOLUTIONS SILVERADO, STARTED EIGHTH, FINISHED SIXTH:
"Our Silverado was fast all day. We really did have a top-three truck, but when we got the speeding penalty, and then so many long green flag runs, it was tough to make up ground. But we were able to get back to sixth. I am disappointed for my crew because they gave me a good truck, we were fast. But we were able to recover and get a decent finish and a good points day.
"In this series, the closer you get to the front, just because you can catch somebody doesn't always mean you can pass them easily. You have to fight for every position."
MATT CRAFTON, NO. 88 MENARDS/MARVEL MYSTERY OIL SILVERADO, STARTED 30TH, FINISHED 10TH:
"Very good recovery for this team, that was all pit strategy. We did not have a 10th place truck.
"I can't thank these guys on this team enough. They changed more on this truck during pit stops than we did in the garage area during practice. The crawled under the left side and unbolted the trak bar, dropped the track bar on the left side, we probably made close to a dozen changes during the race. I can't thank these guys enough."
BRENDAN GAUGHAN, NO. 77 SOUTH POINT HOTEL SILVERADO, STARTED 33RD, FINISHED 11TH:
"Great recovery. Man, that was way more than I expected. Bryan Berry and this whole South Point team, these guys did a fantastic job. We pitted seven times. We got lucky because we had fuel in the truck on that long green run which is how we were able to stay on the lead lap and that saved us. Bryan did a great job with that.
"I want to thank Mark Smith for his motor. We all know that Kevin Kroyer normally does our engines, but Mark's motor kept me in this thing. We were tight, tight, but we had enough power to keep up when we needed to. This was a lot of work by our boys and I am really proud of them for being able to even salvage anything close to a top-10."
