KANSAS CITY, K.C. - Steve Portenga and the No. 39 Roto-Rooter Chevrolet Silverado qualified 21st for the O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Kansas Speedway Friday, July 5. The race is scheduled for Saturday, July 6.

"This shows what we've been talking about when we say we're geting better," Portenga said. "It's our third-best qualifying effort of the season, so we're excited. In a few weeks, I expect us to be unhappy unless we're in the top 20.

"This is a credit to all the guys on the team that have stuck with it through this rough stretch. They never gave up. With their effort and Roto-Rooter's support, we're turning this season around."

Portenga's fastest lap around the 1.5-mile oval was 33.995 seconds (158.847 miles per hour). Jason Leffler won the pole for the O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 with a lap of 32.567 (165.812).

Portenga's effort earned him his first top-25 starting position since the Ram Tough 200 at Gateway (Ill.) International Raceway May 5.

Portenga has raced twice at the Kansas Speedway. He finished 14th in the O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 in 2001. He was 18th in a NASCAR Winston West Series race at the track that same season.

The O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT/10 a.m. PDT Saturday, July 6. The race is slated for telecast on ESPN and broadcast on the radio affiliates of the Motor Racing Network.
