Lester top Rookie at Texas.
BILL LESTER (No. 8 Dodge Motorsports Dodge Ram)
NOTE: Starting in a career-best seventh place, Lester is the O'Reilly 400's top-qualifying Raybestos Rookie - the fifth time this year Lester has been the fastest rookie qualifier.
"Well I think we did pretty well out there. I'm a little bit disappointed because we didn't go as fast as we did in practice, but we're talking about a couple of hundredths of a second so I guess I shouldn't be too disappointed about that. We're fast as heck down the straightaway - these Arrington motors are strong. We're just a little bit tight in these corners. There's a little bit too much scrub with these new stickers and everything, and I think that just took off a little bit of edge off of them.
"I'm happy. These Bobby Hamilton guys worked hard. We were busting our humps to get it through tech and get out there in time. So, we're out there, and the thing we're keeping in mind is that it's not how we start it's how we finish. So, we're looking forward to our first top-10. A think we've got a good enough start to make that achievable.
"The faster the track, the better. Texas is a fast track, and I love speed. You can give me a fast track any day.
"I really owe it all to the guys on the Bobby Hamilton racing team. They gave me a terrific Dodge right off the trailer. I've never been to Texas before. I've never even seen this place before, so I talked to my team owner, Bobby Hamilton, and to my teammate, Robert (Pressley). They told me what to do and what not to do.
"We're pretty tickled to death to start off seventh because it's my best start - my best prior to this was ninth. But again, it's all about how you finish. This a great start, but we've got more in store.
"The season has been going really well. I've been learning an awful lot. We've had somewhat of a monkey on our back to begin with. We ran real strong and came in pretty fast, but we kind of got hung up in some bad luck that wasn't really of our own doing. But we've been able to turn the corner now. We're really happy about that. The guys are really pumped. We're looking forward to qualifying up front and running up front."
