Darrell Wallace Jr. took 2015 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Wendell Scott to victory lane at Martinsville Speeedway on Saturday after the Kroger 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race.
"It means a lot," Wallace said. "I know I had a guardian angel watching over me this weekend."
It was Wallace's fourth-career win and his second-straight in the fall race at Martinsville. He also was credited with most laps led, running up front for 97 of the 200 laps that made up the race.
"I'm so stoked for my team," Wallace said. "My guys have worked tremendous hours all week long."
Last week's race winner at Talladega Superspeedway, Timothy Peters finished second, and series points leader Matt Crafton was third.
Tempers flare
"Great Toyota Tundra by the Red Horse Racing team," Peters said. "This is Martinsville; tempers are going to flare.
Those tempers flared between Sauter and Peters after the race.
After racing Crafton and German Quiroga, three-wide, for the lead after the final restart of the race in the final 10 laps, Sauter wound up with a tire rub after contact from Quiroga and then got sideways after an encounter that also involved Peters. Sauter wound up finishing seventh.
"What a disgrace of a race," Sauter said.
Race summary
Wallace started the race from pole, but lost the lead to Ryan Blaney on lap 18. Wallace retook the top spot on a restart a few laps later, only to lose it once again to Crafton. Crafton was joined up front by ThorSport teammate Sauter soon after a restart following a lap 56 caution and Sauter eventually took over.
Wallace got back to the front with about 80 laps to go and was joined at the front by Sauter, passing rookie Austin Hill who had stayed out. Sauter took his final turn out front of the race with just under 40 to go -- a lead that was lost to Wallace during four-wide action that saw German Quiroga spin.
Best of the rest
Erik Jones finished fourth, and Blaney was fifth.
"We ended, luckily, on a good note," Blaney said. "I thought we were done; my tow was all messed up."
Blaney's truck was among the trucks involved in a multi-truck wreck that brought out the eighth of 11 cautions on lap 137.
Tyler Reddick finished sixth, Matt Tifft eighth, Alex Guenett ninth, and Quiroga rounded out the top-10.
