Dodge grabs top three starting spots; Lester fastest rookie
JASON LEFFLER (No. 2 Team ASE/Car Quest Racing Dodge Ram)
"Some fast trucks are left to run, and we knew Ted Musgrave was going to be tough. He helped me out after practice. This is a great team to be with, and if we end up in the top five I'll be happy. We've got a good truck for tomorrow. We didn't practice but about four laps. I'm happy with that lap. We picked up a lot from practice. I didn't think it would run that quick. I think any time you have laps here, it helps. I got plenty of them last year, so that didn't hurt any today."
BRIAN ROSE (No. 4 Sunclear Energy Team Dodge Ram)
"We picked up eight tenths from practice. We're real happy. Happy Hour is coming up and we've got something to work with now. We weren't real sure about my rhythm against the track. At a place like Darlington, that's all you've got to go on, your rhythm against the track. I've got a rhythm, and I'm looking forward to Happy Hour to make some adjustments for the truck. We let Bobby Hamilton get in the truck yesterday for about two hours and the truck wasn't right. We had to change a lot of stuff in it. It's kind of frustrating because it's the truck that won here last year. We came back with the same setup and ended up having to make some big changes. We developed a new snout in the offseason, and we believe that's helped our program. I'm proud of everyone who's helped me get to this point. This is my first time here. I've never even seen the place before. It's totally new for me, and it's going to take some practice getting used to it."
CARLOS CONTRERAS (No. 43 Hot Wheels Dodge Ram)
"We ran faster this morning. Turns three and four are tough turns. We found a good setup for the race. We tried to be fast in qualifying, but we were too loose. I'm not happy with the lap. We're setup for tomorrow. This is my second time here. It's tough, totally different. It's fun. I like Darlington. We ran pretty good here last year, and we'll be OK tomorrow."
RODNEY SAWYERS (No. 68 R&J Racing Dodge Ram)
"We stressed out this morning. We had to change a lot of stuff. We overlooked the oil line and it came loose during qualifying. I don't know if we're going to miss the show now or what."
TOM POWERS (No. 55 5-Star Lighting and Recreation Dodge Ram)
"This is a new truck we picked up and the first time we ran it. We picked up a lot on that second qualifying lap. I wish we could have had that for a practice lap. We might have been able to do a little better. We haven't been practicing on the new tires. I realized the new tires were a big deal. We picked up a lot when we put the stickers on."
TED MUSGRAVE (No. 1 Mopar Performance Dodge Ram)
"It got a little tight in three and four. The shade is down there right now, but any time you can bring it back without a Darlington strip it's OK. I'm not happy with it. It's off quite a bit from what we ran earlier. That's all right. We'll go try to win the race now. This race track is real abrasive, and it's easy to use the tires up. There's nothing wrong with the tires. If I'm going to lose the pole, I'd rather my teammate get it from me."
BILL LESTER (No. Dodge Motorsports Dodge Ram)
"It was an exciting lap. I didn't know what we had because we got our Darlington stripe in practice today. They told me it was going to be as good as it was this morning, and as it turned out, it was. I'm happy because I had no idea what we ran. I couldn't talk to the crew, and they couldn't talk to me, so I didn't know what to expect. They looked happy, so I knew we did something right. I pretty much had to get my confidence back, so I had to have a warmup lap. The way these guys worked, I couldn't worry about the stripe. I went into turn one and couldn't worry about what was going to happen. I wasn't going to leave anything on the table. I knew the second time I came through there that I had everything I needed. I just kept it down and it worked out for me.
"I hit this morning down in three and four. I was Super Man on new tires. I was good in one and two and so I thought I'd see how it stuck in three and four. I overstepped my boundaries. I think the word I use for this track is interesting. Actually, I used the word diabolical with these guys. They told me to stop using such big words, so I went back to interesting. It's definitely different. It's like nothing I've been on before. It's a challenge. They say it's a driver's track. I'm hoping I can prove I'm a driver.
"We wanted to get in a little more practice this morning. We had a shock change we wanted to try that we didn't get to, but we'll take it."
