Concord, NC...Battling it out from start to finish, Brendan Gaughan and Orleans Racing fought their way to a second place finish at the Hardee's 200, the inaugural NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at Lowes Motor Speedway.
Putting the No. 62 American Racing Wheels/Orleans Dodge in 9th on the Starting Grid, Gaughan powered off in his typical fashion, ready to move forward. "I knew we had an incredible truck," said Gaughan. "We were a little loose, but all in all our Dodge was pretty much a rocketship."
A Competition Caution came out on Lap 39 and Gaughan headed on to pit lane. "I have no idea where my head was," he said. I must have been thinking about something else because the next thing I knew I had missed our pit. It was flat stupid, but my crew chief Shane Wilson managed to keep me calm. Luckily we were under yellow and I went around and came in again without going down a lap. But boy, did I feel dumb!"
Pulling out in 22nd, Gaughan immediately began one of his well-known charges to the front. Moving steadily up through the field, it wasn't long before he was back up in the top ten. Making their second and final pit stop under yellow on lap 103, Gaughan took on tires and fuel, coming in and going out in 4th. A few laps later he pulled into second, behind veteran driver Ted Musgrave. "We were running right up there and although we knew we were fast, we also knew that there weren't enough laps left to take over the Number One spot."
With just two laps to go another competitor spun and the caution came out. "As soon as I saw the yellow, I knew we would have a Green-White-Checkered finish and that's one of the things that makes the Craftsman Truck Series so exciting." And, exciting it was as Gaughan tried to beat Musgrave out. " We were racing side-by-side and I saw his wheels spin. I figured the win was mine, but no such luck. Musgrave is one of the best in this series and once again he proved it as he took the Checkered. It really was a great race and the crowd was awesome. Tonight was some of the best racing in all of NASCAR.
