Portenga pleased with Roto-Rooter Chevy in Michigan test sessions.

BROOKLYN, Mich. - The smile on Steve Portenga's face was almost as bright as the late afternoon sunshine at the Michigan International Speedway Friday, July 26. Hours after being slotted into 20th position in the Michigan 200 when qualifying was cancelled due to rain, Portenga completed a pair of practice sessions. He climbed from his No. 39 Roto-Rooter Chevrolet beaming.

"We're pretty darned good," Portenga said. "I'm really pleased with how
the Roto-Rooter Chevrolet is running. It's a shame we didn't get to
qualify, because I think we'd be better than 20th. But the race is what
matters. We're ready to go get another top-10 finish."

The practice sessions were the first laps Portenga had ever turned at the high-banked two-mile Michigan oval.

"I like the place," he said. "People say it's like California, and I can see why, but I think this place is a little easier to drive. It has more banking, and that makes it feel wider. You can use more of the race track here."

Portenga posted the 11th-fastest lap among the 35 trucks that participated in the final practice session. His best lap was 42.589 seconds (169.058 miles per hour). Ted Musgrave, who will start on the Michigan 200 pole, posted the fastest lap of the session (41.846/172.059).

The Michigan 200 is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT/10 a.m. PDT Saturday, July 27. The race will be telecast live on ESPN and the radio affiliates of the Motor Racing Network.
