After taking the lead on a restart inside the final 25 laps of the STP 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill., on Sunday, Joey Logano drove the No. 22 Penske Racing Ford into victory lane. His Penske teammate, Sam Hornish Jr. in the No. 12 Ford, finished second to give car owner Roger Penske a Chicagoland one-two finish. The No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet of Austin Dillon finished third, making Dillon the winner of the race's $100,000 Nationwide Insurance Dash 4 Cash bonus, as he was the highest finisher of the four drivers eligible to race for the bonus at Chicagoland.
"That's awesome," Dillon said of receiving his second-straight $100,000 bonus. "I'm really proud of these guys. I think we were just one adjustment away from the win today."
With his runner-up finish, Hornish took over the Nationwide Series championship points leader from Regan Smith, driver of the No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet. Smith finished 13th after a spin with 71 laps to go.
Logano isn't eligible for driver points in the Nationwide Series, but his win did help out Penske, points-wise. With the win, the No. 22 car made up ground on owner points leader, the No. 54 Toyota of Joe Gibbs Racing. The No. 54, driven at Chicagoland by Camping World Truck Series regular Joey Coulter, finished outside the top-10.
According to Logano, the reason he traveled to Chicagoland to run the Nationwide race during the Sprint Cup off-weekend, was to gain owner points for the No. 22 team. "Mission accomplished," he said after the race.
The No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Elliott Sadler finished fourth, and Brian Vickers, another of the four drivers eligible for the Dash 4 Cash bonus at Chicagoland, finished fifth in the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, despite losing positions on pit road multiple times in the race with a backup pit crew.
As the Dash 4 Cash winner, Dillon made himself eligible to race for the bonus again next weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. By being the other three highest-finishing series regulars on Saturday, Hornish, Sadler and Vickers also qualified to race for the bonus in Indy.
Before Logano took the lead on the final restart, the race was mostly led by Hornish, Sadler and Dillon. Hornish started the race from the pole, with Sadler alongside in second. Hornish went on to lead the first 49 laps of the 200 lap race until Sadler beat him off pit road during a caution. Hornish got off pit road second but wound up restarting the race in the 20th position after a pit road speeding penalty.
Sadler then took over and led until just past the halfway point of the race. His No. 11 team took a few extra seconds getting his car full of fuel during a green-flag pit stop, handing the lead over to Dillon by the time the cycle of green-flag stops completed.
Meanwhile, Hornish was working his way back toward the front. By the halfway point of the race, he was back within the top-five of the running order.
Logano got to the lead for the first time shortly after taking two tires under a caution with about 71 laps remaining. Although everyone else who pitted took four, Logano didn't restart with the lead. Instead, the No. 32 Turner Scott Motorsports Chevrolet of Kyle Larson did by staying out. But when the race went back to green, Logano quickly made his way to the front.
Logano wasn't out front for long, though, as Sadler retook the lead with about 55 laps remaining. Soon after, Hornish moved back into second. Hornish took the lead from Sadler on the next restart that followed a caution with under 40 laps to go. Sadler then got shuffled back to fourth when he was also passed by Logano and Dillon on the restart.
After one more caution, the Penske duo of Hornish and Logano restarted the race on the front row. With Logano taking the lead on the restart and pulling away to the win, Hornish maintained second. Dillon and Sadler also remained in their third and fourth positions the rest of the way.
"I don't know if it was the car to beat," Logano said. "At the beginning, it was a third or fourth-place car, but (crew chief) Jeremy (Bullins) made the right adjustments throughout the race to make the car better."
Finishing sixth through 10th were the No. 77 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota of Parker Kligerman, the No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford of Trevor Bayne, the No. 31 Turner Scott Motorsports Chevrolet of Justin Allgaier, the No. 5 JR Motorsports Chevrolet of Brad Sweet, and the No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet of Matt Crafton.
