Despite finishing 34th, Wallace car was again fast in Las Vegas

Front A-Arm had broken and once the repairs were made, Mike returned to the track 37 laps down.

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Lady luck was nowhere to be found for the No. 01 G&K Services race team in Las Vegas. The team began the weekend with high hopes after running well in the first two races.

The team worked hard to prepare the racecar throughout the week utilizing the Las Vegas Motor Speedway garage, but come Friday, rain ruined all on track activity for the day. Both morning and afternoon practice was canceled, and the field was set by the rulebook.

NASCAR provided the teams a brief practice session on Saturday before the race, from 8:00 till 9:00 a.m. Although this session was also delayed, the No. 01 G&K Services Chevy piloted by crafty veteran Mike Wallace did make a few runs to work on race setup. The team would end up taking the green flag in 19th to start the 300 mile, 200 lap race.

After spending quality time with the folks from G&K Services, Mike strapped in the car and began to pace the field before the green flag.

Once the race went green, the No. 01 car dropped back a few positions, practicing a strategy that allowed the team to finish the race. After the first round of stops, Wallace radioed in that he was beginning to notice a problem with the car.

Initially believing the issue to be a flat right front tire, the problem was actually more serious. Just before 50 laps, Mike took the No. 01 G&K Services Chevy to the garage for repair, where the crew immediately noticed the front A-Arm had broken.

Once the repairs were made, Mike returned to the track 37 laps down, eventually finishing 34th. Although the run was not what the team needed or wanted, the car was again fast, so the team will look to Bristol.

Mike Wallace: “First I want to say how much fun our team had here in Vegas at the South Point Hotel and Casino. We had a weird weekend, with the rain moving in on Friday. We didn’t have much time to practice the car, but we still felt ready to race on Saturday.”

“Also, a big thanks to our friends at G&K Services for supporting us this weekend and coming to hang out before the race. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the run we wanted, because something in the front end was messed up. Hopefully we can rebound at Bristol next weekend.”
