Tim Fedewa To Drive Stanley Pontiac in 1999
HARRISBURG, N.C. (December 1, 1998)---Stanley Racing announced today that Tim Fedewa will fill the driver's seat of the No. 36 Stanley Pontiac, fielded by Cicci-Welliver Racing, for the 1999 NASCAR Busch Series season.
Fedewa joins Cicci-Welliver Racing with six full years of NASCAR Busch Series racing experience. Since 1993, Fedewa has claimed three poles, three wins, 15 top-five and 39 top-10 finishes.
"I am really excited about joining Cicci-Welliver Racing," explained Fedewa. "This is a great opportunity for me. I have a good relationship with this team, not only Mike (McLaughlin) and Todd (Bodine), but with the owners Frank (Cicci) and Scott (Welliver). They are a premier team with a high caliber of people.
"Stanley has been a committed sponsor in this sport for a long time," said Fedewa. "I am glad that I have the opportunity to drive for them and I think 1999 will be a successful year for all of us."
Fedewa's racing career began in the late 1980's on the dirt tracks in his hometown of Holt, Mich. It wasn't long before he switched to racing on pavement and started winning races. Fedewa won rookie of the year in 1989 on the ARTGO circuit and claimed the title in 1991 on the ASA circuit.
Fedewa moved to North Carolina in 1993 to begin his racing career in the NASCAR Busch Series. He had one top-five and four top-10 finishes in his rookie year. Fedewa's first win came on his 67th NASCAR Busch Series start at Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway in 1995.
Driving the No. 33 Kleenex Chevrolet in 1998, Fedewa added two more wins to his resume at Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway on May 17 and South Boston (Va.) Speedway on July 25. He also sat on the pole at Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Speedway on July 11. Fedewa ended the 1998 NASCAR Busch Series season with four top-fives, 10 top-10's and finished seventh in the championship points battle.
Vic Kangas, a native from Fitchburg, Mass. will join the Stanley team as Fedewa's crew chief. The two began working together at Bace Motorsports in April of 1998.
Kangas' career started in the mid sixties building cars for Ron Bouchard in New England. He made the move to North Carolina in 1991 and became Joe Nemechek's NASCAR Busch Series crew chief. Together they won the 1992 NASCAR Busch Series championship. Kangas' racing focus before joining Fedewa at Bace was consulting for other teams in both NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series competition.
"Vic is a smart guy and has been involved in racing all his life," explained Clyde McLeod, team manager for Cicci-Welliver Racing. "Vic and Tim have a great chemistry together and it showed this year when they won at Nazareth Speedway and Myrtle Beach Speedway. It's an asset that both are joining our team."
"I'm very happy to be working with Tim and the Stanley team," explained Kangas. "Tim and I get along well and we communicate well during the race, and it is my philosophy that communication is a key to success in racing."
