Kyle Busch heads to Dover with Nationwide win record in sight
As the NASCAR Nationwide Series heads to Dover International Speedway for Saturday’s 5-Hour Energy 200, Kyle Busch finds himself one win away from tying Mark Martin’s series record of 49 wins. Busch claimed win 48 last weekend at Darlington Raceway.
Being within one of Mark’s win record is special.
“Being within one of Mark’s win record is special,” Busch said. “We’ve said it the last few times since I’ve probably been within five of being able to eclipse him.”
Busch’s road to 48 wins include 211 starts in Nationwide Series competition. Aside from those 48 wins, he has also tallied 109 top-fives and 138 top-10 finishes.
Busch stands a good shot of getting his own 49th win this weekend at Dover. After all, he’s tied for most Nationwide wins at the track with three, and he swept both series races there last season.
“We’ll see when it happens, if it happens,” Busch said. “Maybe some say it’s inevitable, but to us, we just keep working our guts out and making sure we bring good race cars to the race track.”
It doesn’t hurt that the track surface at Dover is concrete, especially since Busch has amassed 17 wins on concrete since 2008 across all three of NASCAR’s national series -- Camping World Truck, Nationwide and Sprint Cup. That’s pretty impressive since NASCAR’s track lineup only includes three concrete surfaces -- Dover, Bristol Motor Speedway and Nashville Superspeedway.
Busch’s Dover success isn’t limited to Nationwide Series competition, either. He also has a couple of Sprint Cup wins and a Truck Series win at the track. And most of those wins came pretty recently. All of his Cup and Nationwide wins at Dover came within the last three years. The Truck Series win was in 2005.
The 5-Hour Energy 200 is slated to take the green flag at approximately 2 p.m. ET. Live television coverage is scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET start on ESPN. The race can also be heard on MRN and Sirius XM channel 90.
