Ridling Motorsports Acquires RLP Racing and Will Field An Additional NASCAR Busch Series team with Rodney Combs and Lance Snacks

Mooresville, N.C. (November 21, 1996) -- Ridling Motorsports has purchased the majority interest of RLP Racing and will field an additional NASCAR Busch Series team with driver Rodney Combs and Lance Snacks. RLP Racing, owned by Richard Petty, will continue to maintain a minority interest in the team throughout the 1997 season. The Ridling Motorsports operation, which includes the HYPE Chevrolet Monte Carlo team with driver Kevin Lepage, will be housed in a new 22,500 square ft. complex in Mooresville, N.C. "Ridling Motorsports has been working for several months to form another team and had planned for Dennis Setzer and Lipton Tea to fill that option," said David Ridling, team owner of Ridling Motorsports. "When Lipton abruptly withdrew their involvement in NASCAR racing, it left us without a sponsor. "With our focus firmly set on forming another team, Richard Petty, Rodney Combs and Lance Snacks presented us with this unique opportunity. This option allows Ridling Motorsports to acquire a fully-operational race team with a quality driver and sponsor and allows Rodney to focus on what he does best, drive race cars." Combs, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, will relinquish his day-to-day duties with the race team and will focus his efforts on driving the No. 43 Lance Snacks Chevrolet Monte Carlo. "When we hired Kevin Lepage as our driver and removed the burden of team management from him, he rose to the top of his game," said Ridling. "I have all the confidence that removing Rodney's daily team duties and allowing him to concentrate solely on driving will produce similar results." A full-time competitor in the NASCAR Busch Series since 1993, Combs is looking forward to his 'limited' responsibilities. "With the influx of successful two-car race teams in NASCAR, we felt this option allowed Ridling Motorsports, Rodney Combs, Kevin Lepage, Lance Snacks and all our sponsors the opportunity to remain a contender in this extremely competitive series," said Combs. "With the burden of team management removed from me, I can once again become a focused driver." Petty will continue his long-time association with Combs but will greatly reduce his efforts in order to focus on his other racing ventures. "With the success of my NASCAR Winston Cup Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams, I haven't been able to focus my attention on Rodney Combs and the No. 43 NASCAR Busch Series team," said Petty. "When the opportunity for RLP Racing and Ridling Motorsports to join forces arose, I realized it was the ideal situation for Rodney and Lance Snacks. Two car operations have proven to be very beneficial." The seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion will remain a spokesperson for Lance Snacks. "I am pleased to continue my association with Lance Snacks and will continue to represent them both on and off the race track," added Petty. Crew Chief C.R. Miller will oversee and manage both racing operations and a co-crew chief will be announced at a later date. "We are committed to being front-runners in NASCAR racing and welcome this opportunity for Rodney Combs and Lance Snacks," said Henry Pully, Director of Marketing of Lance Inc. "Ridling Motorsports is a proven winner in the Busch Series and we look for this new venture to elevate Rodney and Lance Snacks to the next level." Lance currently produces over 200 different snack items on a daily basis from bakeries in Charlotte, N.C. and Burlington, Iowa. The company employs over 2100 route sales people in 32 states to distribute these fine line of Lance crackers, cookies, chips and peanuts. Just as it has been since the brand's inception in 1938, the Toastchee peanut butter cheese cracker is still the company's leading product. Incorporated in 1926, Lance is a publicly-owned corporation with its stock traded over the NASDAQ national exchange (LNCE) .
