Harmon gets No. 24 in 2004
GIC acquires number from Hendrick and relinquishes No. 44
MOORESVILLE, NC--GIC Motorsports announces today the team will use the No. 24 on its NASCAR Busch Series car in the 2004 season. Driver Mike Harmon last raced with the number in the 1996 Busch Series season. Prior to that, Harmon raced with No. 24 in lower racing divisions including the NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series and The Hooters Cup Series.
"I'm excited to be racing with the No. 24 again. It's the number I have won all my championships with, and the number people know me by," said Harmon.
Harmon was asked by Nextel Cup driver Terry Labonte for the rights to the No. 44 for his son Justin Labonte's Busch Series car. Harmon then suggested that Labonte ask his Hendrick Motorsports team, who owns the No. 24 in NASCAR's Busch and Nextel Cup Series, to release No. 24 for Harmon's Busch Series car.
"I basically told him, 'we'll give you the 44 if you can get us the 24.' So everything worked out," said Harmon.
Harmon has raced under the No. 44 in the Busch Series since the 2001 season. Harmon finished the 2003 season in 23rd place and ran in all but two races. GIC will debut the number on February 14, 2003 in Daytona Beach, Florida in the Hershey's Kisses 300 at Daytona International Speedway.
