Elliott Sadler Completes His Busch Series Career

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Elliott Sadler wrapped up his Busch Series career in the No. 66 Phillips 66/Trop Artic Chevrolet Monte Carlo this weekend at the Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex. After starting from the outside pole, Sadler led several laps and ran in the top 10 throughout the first half of the 200-lap event. The Phillips 66 Chevrolet got loose coming out of turn four on lap 109, sending Sadler spinning a couple of times before the No. 66 machine tapped the front stretch wall, damaging the radiator. Sadler finished the last race of the 1998 season 13 laps down in 36th place. Sadler will attend the NASCAR Busch Series banquet in Beverly Hills, Calif., on January 8, 1999, to receive recognition for finishing the 1998 season eighth in the final driver points standings.

"When we started out this season, our goal was to win the Busch Series championship," Sadler said. "It didn't work out that way, and it has been a pretty frustrating season for everyone. A lot of times this year we would have great cars and get into trouble late in the race. We had great cars at our last two races in Atlanta and Homestead and just got into trouble. That's just the way this racing business goes.

"Although we didn't have the kind of season we were expecting, we did experience some pretty good success. We won two races and we won them at tracks we weren't expecting to win. I never would have dreamed that I would win at Bristol and Rockingham before the start of this season. We also won the pole at Texas and was on the outside pole a few times. With that kind of success, you really can't be too disappointed."

Sadler completed the 1998 season with two wins, one pole, three outside poles, five top-five finishes and 10 top-10 finishes. In addition to completing the season, Sadler completed his NASCAR Busch Series career. He will move up to Winston Cup full time in the 1999 season. Sadler's career results consist of five career wins, five poles, six outside poles, 12 top fives and 24 top 10s in the career stats.

"I wish we could have run for the championship this season, but we just didn't get the breaks we needed to make that happen," Sadler said. "I've had real mixed emotions about moving up to Winston Cup. It's been a dream of mine since I was a little kid, but I am going to miss all the guys on this Phillips 66 team. Gary Bechtel gave me an opportunity when no one else in the Busch Series would. Sandy Jones and all the guys at Diamond Ridge are the reason I've been able to enjoy some pretty good success in the Busch Series."
