KASEY KAHNE - No. 38 Great Clips Taurus (Qualified 2nd)
DID YOU KIND OF EXPECT TO GET BUMPED BY JUNIOR?
"I didn't necessarily expect it, but I knew he'd put up a good lap. It's too bad he was last and we went out so early and had to wait so long, but it was close. Our team did an awesome job. I crashed that car at Talladega on lap eight and that was pretty much a brand new car. It was the same chassis, but everything else was new so it was a good team effort. We just missed the pole by one-hundreth or so."
HOW WILL THE CAR BE IN THE RACE?
"I don't know, I hope it's real good. I think we have a good car. We've qualified good at a couple of these races this year, but we don't draft quite as good as we qualify. Hopefully, we've made a few changes to help that this time and we can race as good as we qualified."
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU TO BE ABLE TO SHOWCASE YOUR TALENT?
"It's cool to do it at Daytona. Just being at Daytona and everything that has gone on here, it's fun to start up front. It just shows that our Great Clips team does an awesome job. As a driver, you just go out there and run around the track for two laps and as good as your car is, that's where you sit usually for qualifying. The race is a little bit different, but in qualifying it has a lot to do with the car and our team did a good job to get it there."
ARE YOU FRUSTRATED AT ALL WITH THE CLOSE CALLS FOR A POLE?
"We've come close a few times this year. We've qualified good all year and today, I wouldn't say it's frustrating because I knew Junior was last and he was faster than us in practice. I thought Michael Waltrip would be real fast too, but, no, I wasn't frustrated. I was a little bit nervous because I want to sit on a pole pretty bad and now we'll just have to wait - maybe at Chicago."
HOW MUCH BETTER EQUIPPED DO YOU FEEL NOW THAN IN FEBRUARY?
"I feel a lot better. When I was here in February it was my second restrictor plate race and then we went to Talladega and ran eight laps there, so we really haven't gotten a whole lot more laps on these type of tracks, but I've learned a lot as a driver driving a Busch car. Hopefully, I've learned that and learned a little bit more about the drafting and it will pay off tomorrow."
ON THE DRAFT.
"Usually when I look in my mirror there's nobody behind me. I'll follow Coy (Gibbs) if he'll follow me."
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT HAVING JUNIOR AND WALTRIP IN THIS RACE?
"We know they're gonna be good and maybe I can learn something from them by watching them or racing behind them, if we can stay that close to him. They're always good. I don't know. They're both one of the best on these type of tracks. They're in the race, so I'll just try to learn from them, if I can."
WHAT ABOUT THE ECONOMICS INVOLVED WITH THESE GUYS BEING IN THE RACE?
"These are the races that the team owners, people on the team, and drivers - everybody - looks forward to because of the purses. It's good when you see the big purses like this, so for them to come, we know they're gonna take some of our money. That's just the way it is. They run up front every time, but we'll just have to prepare as good as we can and, hopefully, beat them."
