NASCAR announces rule changes
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 2, 1998) NASCAR officials announced Monday that new rear spoiler heights and front air dam ground clearances will go into effect on all four NASCAR-approved makes of cars in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series starting Feb. 20.
NASCAR Winston Cup Series teams were notified Monday through a technical bulletin that the following changes would go into effect at all tracks, except Daytona International Speedway here and Talladega Superspeedway.
The Chevrolet Monte Carlo will have a new rear spoiler height of 5.0 inches, which is down from 6.0 inches from the NAPA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway at the end of the 1997 season. The Monte Carlo's front air dam ground clearance will be raised from 3.875 inches to 5.0 inches.
The Ford Taurus will have exactly the same measurements as the Monte Carlo.
The Ford Thunderbird will now have a rear spoiler height of 4.75 inches and a front air dam clearance of 5.0 inches. The Thunderbird had a 5.75-inch spoiler and 3.875-inch front air dam clearance at Atlanta.
The Pontiac Grand Prix will now have a 5.375-inch spoiler, which is down from 6.5 inches; and a 4.625-inch front air dam ground clearance, which is up from 3.875 inches last season.
These changes came after intense research with NASCAR officials and several NASCAR Winston Cup Series teams at various race tracks in recent weeks. These changes, in effect starting with the GM Goodwrench Service Plus 400 at the North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham, will be continually evaluated throughout the season and will remain in effect until further notice.
The NASCAR Winston Cup season opens with the Daytona 500 on Feb. 15.
