Watkins Glen, NY (July 28, 2003) - With the SIRIUS at The Glen less than two weeks away, the stars of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series made their much-anticipated return to Watkins Glen International today in the first of two test days at the final road course of the season.
Testing concludes tomorrow and is once again open to the public. Fans that have purchased tickets for the SIRIUS at The Glen weekend, August 7-10, will be admitted free of charge tomorrow and should present their SIRIUS at The Glen tickets at the gate to gain free admission or pick up a voucher at the ticket office if they have not received their event tickets. All other spectators can take in the action for only $5.00 each day at the gate. Gate 4 will be open from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
A large contingent of cars packed the garage today, with Robby Gordon leading the way in his No. 31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet around the 2.45-mile course with a time of 1:11.79, followed by Greg Biffle's 1:12.06 in the No. 16 Grainger Ford. Biffle was closely followed by Roush Racing teammate Mark Martin, who's No. 6 Viagra Ford clocked in at 1:12.09. A bunch of road course aces came across the line next, with Ron Fellows' No. 1 Pennzoil Chevrolet timing in at 1:12.40, followed by the No. 4 Kodak Film Pontiac of PJ Jones at 1:12.42 and Boris Said's lap of 1:12.43 in his No. 01 US Army Pontiac.
Championship contender Dale Earnhardt Jr. was good enough for 1:12.50 in his No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet and was quickly followed by points leader Matt Kenseth's lap of 1:12.61 in the No. 17 DeWalt Ford. Road course king Jeff Gordon's No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet came across the line at 1:12.70, followed by the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet of Bobby Labonte at 1:12.77 and the No. 41 Target Dodge of rookie Casey Mears at 1:13.00.
Rounding out the field was the No. 04 Morgan McClure entry with Johnny Miller behind the wheel, timing in at 1:13.07; Scott Pruett, in a third Chip Ganassi entry with a time of 1:13.27; Kyle Petty's No. 45 Georgia Pacific Dodge at 1:13.75; Christian Fittipaldi's No. 44 New York Yankees Dodge at 1:13.76 and the No. 33 Menards Chevrolet driven by Paul Menard at 1:13.90.
Road racing becomes the focus of race fans across the country as America's most popular racing series - NASCAR Winston Cup - takes on multiple left- and right-hand turns and nasty elevation changes at The Glen August 7-10th in the SIRIUS at The Glen.
