WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (Dec. 6, 1999) Watkins Glen International and Global Crossing announced a new name for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series race at Watkins Glen. The NASCAR Winston Cup Series race at The Glen scheduled for the weekend of August 10-13, 2000, will be called Global Crossing @ The Glen.
Global Crossing is an international data communications company that recently completed a strategic merger agreement with Frontier Corporation. The Global Crossing @ The Glen NASCAR Winston Cup Series race will attract people from across the country and Canada for what has become New York's largest weekend spectator sporting attraction.
"Global Crossing's position as a global, leading-edge company makes it an especially attractive business partner for Watkins Glen," said track president Bryan Sperber. "Global Crossing's status as a premier sponsor at Watkins Glen underscores the motorsports fan as a communications savvy demographic and will certainly bring attention to the growing fan base that NASCAR has attracted."
"This is an exciting opportunity for this company and upstate New York as a whole," said Global Crossing Vice-Chairman, Joseph P. Clayton. "Global Crossing continues to be one of the fastest-growing data communications companies in the world, and NASCAR is one of the nation's fastest-growing spectator sports. There's a natural synergy. Our ability to continue the strong relationship we have with Watkins Glen and the Winston Cup Series means continued economic development for the upstate New York region."
