FORT WORTH, Texas (July 10, 2008): The following is a statement from Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage regarding today's announcement by two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart that he will become a co-owner/driver with Stewart Haas Racing beginning in 2009: "Tony's announcement is a bold step and would be comparable to Troy Aikman walking away from the Dallas Cowboys back in the mid-90s to join an expansion team. Tony's success is important to the sport because he is so popular with our fan base. His working-man appeal, his `take this job and shove it' approach rings clear with that base. Many of our fans can identify with him and wish they were in his position. So as a sport, we need him to be successful in this move.

"Tony and I talk about a lot of things and I knew he was interested in team ownership and the next stage of his career. Such a move is not unprecedented. Dale Earnhardt had won a Cup Series championship with Osterlund Racing in 1980, but he left that team in the middle of the next season to join a then-mid-level team Richard Childress Racing. And that worked out pretty well with six more championships. I hope the same happens for Tony and Stewart Haas Racing."
