STUART, Va. (September 25, 2000) -- Wood Brothers Racing celebrates the start of their 1,000th race this weekend and will sport the colors of the team's founder, Glen Wood. The solid red racecar flashes back to the 1950is when Wood owned and piloted the famed Wood Brothers racecar. Glen Wood founded Wood Brothers Racing as a hobby, now it's their life and has been for the past five decades. He and his brothers decided they wanted to go racing and nominations moved that Glen be the driver. Since, half a century has passed but Wood recalls those days as if they were just yesterday.
"We started racing in 1950 with a car we bought for $50," stated Glen Wood as he reminisced to the days of old. "We decided to put number 50 on the side of the car because it just seemed like the right thing to do. Now here we are 50 years later and this sport of NASCAR has emerged like no one ever thought it would. I knew the France family had high hopes for the sport but no one was convinced it would catch on and be this big. I had no idea we'd be around long enough to run 1,000 races and enjoy the success we've had."
Since the team's origination, Glen has won as a driver, car owner and grandfather over the past 50 years. His list of driver's speaks for itself with 17 of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers listed on the Wood Brothers Racing resume.
"We've been fortunate enough to have talented drivers. I've seen some of the greatest drivers that have ever lived in our racecars and it makes me proud. I will always be proud of this team and now I have a grandson that's a racecar driver too. Jon has been successful in everything he's raced so far and I hope he continues to climb through the ranks and eventually ends up driving our Winston Cup car.
"I turned this team over to Eddie and Len years ago and they have been successful at keeping up with the times. Jack (Roush) is a big part of our operation now and I think that will play a part in us getting back to winning races. NASCAR is huge now and it doesn't matter if I'm the owner or driver, there is nothing more rewarding than winning.
"Elliott is a great driver and I think he'll have us in Victory Lane soon. Most people don't realize how much patience he has. He's only 25 years old and today's times are much different than they were years back. He represents a large corporation and has fans all over the United States."
Elliott Sadler currently pilots the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford and is delighted to be able to represent the team in such a memorable year. "It's an honor to be on this team and a privilege to race the historical paint schemes we've run this year," stated Sadler. "Glen Wood founded this team and this weekend our CITGO Ford will have the same paint scheme that he sported back in the 1950is. It's just awesome to be involved with a team that made the sport what it is today."
