NEMECHEK STAYS TOUGH, FINISHES 23RD IN BACKUP CAR

FORT WORTH, Texas (April 9, 2006) -- After a slow start due to a tight-handling racecar, Joe Nemechek was unable to mount a charge as he followed Jeff Gordon to the checkered flag to finish 23rd in Sunday's Nextel Cup race.

Nemechek found himself playing catchup at Texas Motor Speedway after the team's primary car crashed in the first lap of practice on Friday.

"It's not the ideal situation when you can't use the best stuff you bring to the track," said Nemechek. "We just never found a comfort zone with the backup Army Chevrolet."

Nemechek started 17th and faded back in the pack as he struggled with a tight setup. The Army crew kept on making adjustments to improve the handling of the 01 car, but by the time Nemechek started to click off some decent lap times, he was a couple of laps down.

"We were good soldiers again -- never quitting," said Nemechek. "But we have to get this thing figured out and start the race with better handling. I have all of the confidence with our Army team that we'll get it going in the right direction."

Nemechek remained 25th in the driver point standings, one position better than where he was last year at this time.

The Nextel Cup Series has Easter Weekend off and will resume action the following week at Phoenix International Raceway.
