Talladega testing begins this week
TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 4, 1998) April will be a busy month at Talladega Superspeedway, as teams begin arriving this weekend to test for the upcoming 'Track Attack Weekend.'
More than 20 NASCAR Winston Cup Series and NASCAR Busch Series teams are scheduled to test at NASCAR's most competitive track during the next three weeks.
Dave Blaney, driver of the Bill Davis-owned Busch Series entry, will begin testing at Talladega Superspeedway Sunday, and will be followed by Winston Cup regulars Steve Grissom and Ricky Rudd on Tuesday.
Rick Hendrick's DuPont team heads up a list of nine teams scheduled to be at the track April 8-10. Brett Bodine will use his Easter weekend break to get his Paychex Ford Taurus ready for the April 26 DieHard 500.
Mark Martin, who swept both events last spring at Talladega Superspeedway, is among 13 drivers scheduled to be on the track April 13-15. Martin is expected to test both his DieHard 500 car, as well as the Ford he will use to defend his title in the Touchstone Energy 300 Saturday, April 25.
Other teams expected to test at Talladega Superspeedway April 13-15 are: Bill Elliott Racing, MB2 Motorsports, Robert Yates Racing, as well as Team SABCO, Richard Childress Racing, Andy Petree Racing and several cars from the Roush Racing stable.
The NASCAR Busch Series teams will return to Talladega Superspeedway Thursday, April 24 for practice and Bud Pole Award qualifying, while the NASCAR Winston Cup Series teams will arrive on Friday, April 25 for Advance Auto Parts Qualifying Day.
While Mark Martin might be the defending champion of both the Touchstone Energy 300 and the DieHard 500, defending champions at Talladega Superspeedway don't usually repeat.
The Touchstone Energy 300 never has had a repeat winner in its first six years, while the spring Winston Cup race at Talladega hasn't had a repeat winner since 1976.
Run for the first time in 1970, two drivers won five of the first seven DieHard 500s. David Pearson won three consecutive spring races from 1972-1974, followed by Buddy Baker's consecutive victories in 1975 and 1976. Baker, however, was the last driver to win consecutive spring races at Talladega Superspeedway.
While the DieHard 500 has eight multiple winners, only Dale Earnhardt and Martin have won the spring race more than once in the 1990s. Earnhardt won in 1990 and again in 1994, while Martin won in 1995 and 1997.
A few grandstand tickets remain for the April 26 DieHard 500 along with reserved infield locations. Reserved tower seats still remain for the April 25 Touchstone Energy 300.
