Marlin Survives Wild Talladega Event; Finishes 16th

TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 29, 2007)-- Sterling Marlin survived a wild Nextel Cup event at Talladega Superspeedway and crossed the finish line in 16th place.

After posting a strong lap during Saturday's qualifying session, Marlin started the 192-lap overtime race from the fourth spot and ran in the top 10 for the majority of the event.

"We had an awesome car today," said Marlin, who led 16 laps during the Aaron's 499. "We would fall back a little bit -- typical of superspeedway racing -- and be able to drive right back to the front. I was having a great time out there and really think we had a chance to contend for the win."

But a multi-car accident on Lap 131 caused slight damage to the No. 14 Chevy and Marlin was forced to come down pit road for repairs.

"The guys did a great job getting my No. 14 Chevy fixed up and we were able to stay on the lead lap," explained Marlin. "We ended up restarting the race in some heavy traffic and weren't able to get back to the front like we needed to."

So when a yellow flag waved on Lap 162 for debris in Turn 2 on the 2.66-mile oval, crew chief Slugger Labbe opted to stay on the racetrack while a number of other cars came to pit road for a splash of fuel.

"We took a gamble and it worked out okay for us," explained Labbe. "But it still isn't the finish we were looking for."

The next race for Marlin and the No. 14 Ginn Racing team will be Saturday night at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway.
