Closing Laps Jam Nemechek at Talladega
TALLADEGA, Ala. (Oct. 8, 2006) -- Joe Nemechek was stuck in line and could not advance his U.S. Army Chevrolet as the Nextel Cup race was winding down at Talladega Superspeedway.
The end result was an 18th-place finish for Nemechek, who was disappointed with the result after having a strong race car during Sunday's 188-lap, 500-mile event.
"Everybody was staying in line and I couldn't go anywhere, it was pretty frustrating," said Nemechek about the closing laps. "I was trying to make something happen and every time I did, I lost a couple of spots. It was a great race until the last 10 laps. But hey, I got a car in one piece. It was a good effort by the Army team and we showed we could run up front. We had a smart race going."
The 01 Army car was solid all day and Nemechek played the typical cerebral shuffling game at Talladega with patience and savvy.
"It was fun for most of the race, we had a fast car," offered Nemechek. "We were in the lead draft all day. I just feel that we should have been in the top 10 at the end."
Crew chief Ryan Pemberton, who called a strategic race on the pit box, was also disappointed with the result.
"I was hoping something good was going to come our way," said Pemberton. "It was a good day until the end. Joe drove great and the pit stops were excellent."
Though the closing laps were pretty calm for Talladega, the drama intensified on the final lap when the two leading cars (Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson) got turned around, which allowed Brian Vickers to take the checkered flag for his first Nextel Cup win.
The U.S. Army Team is staying in Talladega to test the Car of Tomorrow on Monday.
The next event on the Nextel Cup schedule is Saturday night (Oct. 14) at Lowe's Motor Speedway near Charlotte. Qualifying for the event will be on Thursday evening.
