Event: NASCAR Nextel Cup Series UAW-Ford 500 (Race No. 30 of 36)
Weather: Sunny and hot
Winner: Jeff Gordon, driver of the #25 Chevrolet from Hendrick Motorsports
Top-five finishers: Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Dave Blaney, Denny Hamlin and Ryan Newman
Race recap: Jeff Gordon led just one lap on the day -- the last one of the 188-lap event -- to win the Nextel Cup race on Sunday after passing teammate Jimmie Johnson on the final circuit.
The race, like most NASCAR restrictor-plate races, featured a lot of lead changes. In all, nearly half the field was credited with leading at least one lap, with 42 lead changes among 22 drivers overall. Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin tied for the most laps led on the day with 40 each.
The race -- the first for the "Car of Tomorrow" on a restrictor-plate track -- was slowed by 11 caution flags for 34 laps, and the Goodyear Racing team saw a few tires punctured in the latter part of the race.
With his victory, Gordon reassumed the championship lead, which stands at nine points over Johnson. Clint Bowyer is 63 points back and is the only other driver within 150 points of the lead.
Goodyear Racing quote -- Rick Heinrich, sales manager Nextel Cup: "This was the first time that we have used this tire combination for the Nextel Cup Series at Talladega. It was designed this year for the new 'Car of Tomorrow' package, and we are very happy with how our tires looked this weekend. This new package complemented the C.O.T. very well."
The Nextel Cup Series is right back in action for race No. 5 of the 10-race "Chase for the Championship" at Charlotte next Saturday night.
Companion event: Todd Bodine led the most laps -- 46 of 94 -- to win the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Talladega on Saturday. Ron Hornaday, finishing seventh at Talladega, took over the championship lead (+14 over Mike Skinner) after 20 of 25 events.
