"We do want to make you fans aware of one thing when you go back to your hotels. There is probably going to be a conflicting date in 1996 between the DieHard 500 and the Olympics in Atlanta. The hotel rooms are going to be at a premium and it looks like, right now, the best date on the Winston Cup schedule we can give you to get your hotel rooms now so you'll be sure to have a room in 1996, in July, would be the weekend of July 28. When you go back to your hotels tonight, check with them and go ahead and try to book your room if you want to be with us in July of 1996 for the DieHard 500.
In NASCAR Winston Cup qualifying, Elton Sawyer made himself eligible for the Busch Clash of '96 Wild Card drawing when he was the fastest qualifier in Busch Beer Second-Round Qualifying for Sunday's Winston Select 500.
Drivers Ritchie Petty, Joe Nemechek, Billy Standridge, Delma Cowart and Steve Seligman failed to qualify for the Winston Select 500.
In final practice on Saturday afternoon, the Hardee's/Dillard Motorsports team reported that the engine that it had secured from Morgan-McClure Motorsports for Sunday's race had broken. It was unknown whether or not Morgan-McClure would be able to supply a back-up engine at the end of the day Saturday.
Although reserved seat tickets for the Winston Select 500 are sold, unreserved backstretch grandstand seats remain for Sunday's race. They will go on sale at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
