Labonte to Start TaxSlayer.com Chevy 32nd at Talladega
Talladega, AL, (April 24, 2010) - Bobby Labonte will start the No. 71 TaxSlayer.com/TRG Motorsports/Chevrolet Impala SS in 32nd position for tomorrow's running of the Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. The field was set based upon owners points as qualifying was cancelled today due to inclement weather.
Chevy The team is returning to the site of their first top ten finish in their young Sprint Cup history. Labonte will be looking to capitalize on the speed shown in the first practice of the weekend where he lapped the 2.66-mile superspeedway in 49.228-seconds and 195 mph. Labonte hopes to parlay that speed into a top finish as he makes his 35th start at Dega.
"Practice was pretty good," Labonte said. "We did two runs and learned a little bit. Then we made some qualifying runs the second practice. In our situation we can't afford the possibility of being involved in an accident in practice. We took the safe route. Doug (Randolph, crew chief) and I felt good about the car in qualifying trim. We were also thinking ahead to the Daytona July race with the changes we were making."
The No. 71 TaxSlayer.com Chevy was fast in the first practice.
"In the first practice I was getting a good push. The car handled well in that first run in the draft. I got pushed, but we really didn't get to push anyone. We know the car is better in qualifying trim than practice, so we feel good about it."
Labonte knows planning for the race will be trial and error.
"The new spoiler is going to throw a little kink in how the race is run. It will really change the dynamic of the race. Some things will be trial and error. One thing we do know is that the closing rate is really fast. If you lose the draft you will really be in trouble. It will be interesting to see what happens with 43 cars compared to what we had yesterday. The car doesn't drive any different, but when you are drafting it is really fast - lose the draft and you are really slow. I don't think hanging in the back will be an option. I also saw two cars get together and just hall butt to the front. If they broke up a little bit they just slowed down."
TRG Motorsports team principal Kevin Buckler is ready for a strong finish this weekend.
"We have TaxSlayer.com back onboard this weekend and we would like give them a great finish tomorrow," Buckler said. "We brought a good car to the track. Bobby and Doug had it fast right off of the trailer. We all know that anything can happen at these superspeedways and you can take advantage of what happens out there during the race. We will try and get Bobby in a position to benefit from every situation."
